    I just discovered this.

    http://www.soekris.dk/dac1101.html

The only DAC/Amp I know of that uses a multibit DAC. All for $650. From the specs I don't see any audio inputs so everything has to go through the DAC. Probably best to think of this as a USB DAC that happens to have a headphone output. The price is in the same range as the Bifrost Multibit. It would be interesting to see what these are like head to head. My guess is that the Bifrost Multibit would have the edge because of the closed form digital filter along with a bunch of other features that make Schiit great.

Edit: Just realized that this should probably be moved to the DAC forum.

I'd buy this if they strapped a battery to it somehow

If this sounds nearly as good as tweaked dam1021 builds, then i might get one. Soekris Dam1021 is a great DAC, it is comparable to Yggdrasil IME.

I changed the thread title because I realized that it isn't really portable. It's closer to a laptop USB dongle like the Schiit Fulla or the Geek Out. If using this with a smartphone it's probably a good idea to use some like the Schiit Wyrd so you don't drain the battery power.

It has a headphone amp as well as a DAC. It could go either way. Plus I don't have the privileges to change threads.

heard this at RMAF and it REALLY pumped out mohr bass through my (normally neutral) Heir Audio 4.AiS (noble 4 like) CIEMs.
    was very surprising.
not sure if it was the PC, foobar, but the FLAC file was a reference track for me.

very interested in hearing this Soekris again, but didn't have $650 to plunk down on the spot.

Interesting that they are doing a prebuilt version now. There is a lengthy thread on the prior diy version of this dac over on changstar. http://www.changstar.com/index.php/topic,2099.0.html MrRogers, Hrodulf, and Priidik have all built versions with quality off board psu's, among other mods, that are reputed to sound very good, especially when utilizing the updated filters published over on DIYA. On the original Soekris boards, the buffered outputs (i.e. the integrated headphone amp) were not supposed to sound as good as the direct outputs. However, I believe that output stage was op-amp based, and this is described as fully discrete, no feedback. Also, it sounds like the prebuilt has "selectable" filters, but you can't import external code.

10 ohms output impedance is a bit high for something that seems to be geared toward portable setups. I guess you can use it as a DAC and hook it to an amp through line-level outs, but that means another piece of kit to carry around.

EDIT: The Myst/Tento PortaDAC 1866 OCUB has 10 ohm impedance. I did not mean to say, by omission, that the Soekris has 10 ohms of impedance.

Just to clarify: the Soekris dac1101 consumer product is specified as having 3 ohms output impedance on the headphone output. The buffered output on the DIY board (dam1021) is specified as having 20 ohms output impedance.

Actually, though they'll not provide any support for it, they said the dac1101 WILL support uploading of filters. Same engine / protocol.

Oops, sorry! Was not referring to the Soekris dac1101, but to the Myst/Tento PortaDAC 1866 OCUB. Those are listed as having 10 ohms of output impedence.

Hmm, the website isn't loading for me... Does this have balanced line/pre outs?

Weird, it doesn't seem to be listed anymore.

From what I remember it has a discrete amp with a 6.3mm output jack, nothing balanced. It also has an RCA output but I don't know if that is a direct lineout from the DAC or if you can control it with the volume knob.

I dealt with him and he was very fast responding and I got my stuff and it was very nicely made. Anyway, I signed up for one. Just letting you guys know

end of april! they changed it to 0.02% instead of 0.05 resistor version because all the people wanted it.. so I had to pay slightly more but I"m glad actually :p
