The amp output from the G6 sounds dirty, slightly weaksauce. The timbre in the highs could be better, but hardly bad. The G6's strength was @Hands noted was its liveliness and expressiveness which often isn't heard with cheap stuff like this. The K5Pro has more expansive headstage (rendered moot if one uses the above G6 settings for virtual surround). However, the K5Pro was glarey in the highs and boring / unengaging / insipid otherwise.

I am surprised? Nope, not if you know what parts are used and the topology of the design. The parts and topology will determine a large part of the perceived sound. More than any single SINAD measurement with a specific set of parameters.

This is for the amp section only, that is without the external DAC. External power brick was used. Also, gain was set to high (to get sufficient output because without, max output is too low). Note that setting gain to tends to result in worse THD because less negative feedback is used in the circuit.

Yep that really verifies it, had several G6's and always hated the high gain mode. In low gain, direct mode is pretty good depending on the headphones power requirements. This week I have an SMSL SP200, Sennheiser GSX1000, and a Soundblaster G6 coming in and Kabeldirekt 3.5mm to RCA cables should see which does best to line out using it just as a DAC. Also have a Drop THX 789 and going to do a weekend gaming shootout starting Friday to see which combination is the best. The Topping D10b and THX 789 is pretty good now, will be hard to beat. Also the Khadas Tone2 is here, which really has good accuracy for 3D gaming, the amp is limited but as a DAC it's good, but how it compares to the G6 in low gain mode at 78% Windows volume remains to be heard. Good to see the numbers though, always knew high gain mode sounded worse.

TBH, I did use an external input (from the AP generator which would be pristine). The mediocre results above are probably because the input circuit sucks and adds more crap to the signal. The measurements below are using the optical digital input of the G6.

Here's the AmirNAD panel. 1kHz, 20kHz bandwidth, 2Vrms, 300-ohm load, high gain (with volume adjusted)

"SINAD" ain't bad per if you are reasonable person. I think what's more concerning are the presence of higher harmonics tat actually increases slightly as we go up in frequency.

Here is x1 gain at at lower more reasonable for headphones: 0dbU (0.775Vrms). It's a little bit better at this gain (more feedback) and lower level.

I intend to use the G6 in this setup:
    PC USB > G6 analog line out (3.5mm y-converter to RCA) > Atom Amp > HD 800S.
I would use the G6 for its DAC and virtual 7.1 surround.
Question 1: Does the G6 amp get bypassed in this setup, or is my signal amplified twice (both by G6 and Atom Amp)?

I am considering adding an external DAC and use the G6 optical output instead, like this:
PC USB > G6 digital optical out > Atom DAC > Atom Amp - HD 800S.
In this scenario I would just be using the G6 for virtual 7.1 surround.
Question 2: Would the signal in this second scenario be digital all the way from PC source to Atom DAC, or would the G6 do an extra DA/AD conversion in between?

Bonus question: if I plug the headphones straight into the G6, what difference (if any) is there between using the headphone jack vs line out?
