Gungnir MB upgrade should be added to digital value section, supplementary to existing Gungnir. Might be controversial, but I consider Gungnir MB having better price-performance than Yggdrasil. Easily end game performance.

Also want to revive the old M80 vs DT1350 debate - Yay for M80, given less QC consistency problems, many replaceable parts, and arguably better comfort. Sound wise my preference is for M80, but I can see why people is into 1350.

I second this notion.. I've long been interested in hearing the Torpedo w/ the 650 (and 800).. the Parafeed output is said to mate wonderfully with the Senns. It might not get praised for anything in particular.. but it certainly doesn't commit any "sins of commission," from what I've read. Also, I seem to remember someone stating that OJneg's Torpedo build made the Valhalla 2 "sound like the Valhalla 1".. which is some seriously high praise.

Every Audeze has ridiculous, Beyerdynamic-like quality control issues. They don't even have one consistent headphone like Beyer's DT 880. The fazors are garbage and have closed can, plastic timbre like a HD 25. That is unacceptable for open headphones that cost more than a thousand dollars.

The DT 880 gets killed by hair too easily and is more of a mid 80s HD 540 competitor than comparable to Sennheiser's HD 580/600/650 series. Beyerdynamic has nothing better as they've spent the last thirty years biting cyanide capsules and shooting themselves in the face.

I'll add Torpedo up there. Someone tell OJ to write one or two lines on it in this thread. OJs is modded slightly with higher quality caps.

Having heard one (OJ's?) I'd have to agree. It's a great amp.

A suggestion- I used to own the DT880s and although they are touted as semi-closed/open, I remember them providing almost NO isolation from the surroundings.

I'm curious, are there measurements to show what tubes do to the DT880s frequency response? I wanted to like them because they were so comfy but sold them because of the piercing treble.

Tube amps, unless they are broken, won't do anything to the measured frequency response or the distortion of the DT880's treble bump. I know that this seems quite unbelievable, but a tube amp and solid-state that have flat frequency response and un-perceivable levels of measured distortion can sound quite different.

Your experience mirrors mine, on both counts. In the end selling them was more of a relief than anything else

OJ's Torpedo is still using the Edcor transformers?

Edit: My bad, forgot about OJ's posts in the HF Torpedo thread.

I think the marv DAC chart of awesome need to be post here, and it would be great if there is amp and headphone chart like that as well !!

It would help noob like me and many others to not go sideway or sidegrade in this (costly) journey to headphone audio.

Torpedo III build thread is up at Head-Fi. It looks sweet. Tom detailed the build like a boss, as usual. The T3 rolls the more ubiquitous 12v tubes now, too! If the price is right, I think this is going to be my tube amp for the HD650 (or HD800).

Can we use this one instead, the original is way too big for mobile browsers.

Would the DAC part of this list be consolidated with Marv's DAC Chart of Awesomeness?

Not sure why folks are so into the 1350, I owned it and the T50P and for me the T50P was a nice step up in sound quality.

They're really different products re: form factor and use case. I agree that T50rp's (especially good modded ones) sound better than even good DT1350s, but they're also four+ times the size and extremely difficult to use for any mobile application.

I'm a big thumbs down on including the DT1350 simply due to continued chocolate box Beyer problems. Good DT1350s are fantastic: clear across the spectrum with decent treble and extended, detailed bass. But you may have to buy half the store's stock in order to find a good one.

In a lot of ways, the whole portable on-ear category is f'ing terrible. With great product consistency, low price ($40-60 aftermarket), competent sound, and great build quality, if we're going to put one up at all the V-Moda M-80 seems like a solid choice.

actually he's talking about Beyerdynamic T50p, same form factor as the DT1350. might even be its replacement, not sure.

I think AV explained everything I wanted to say.

In addition, I can't understand why Beyerdynamics is not making detachable cable. This is almost a f'ing common sense in the headphone industry, even on dirt cheap stuff.

Anyway, we're derailing a bit too much ... To answer the "LCD3F hate", first thing first, the sonic QC inconsistency of Audeze is a common knowledge to seasoned members on this forum. Secondly, my very good friend mikoss has a LCD3F - this summer in Canada things got a bit hot, and the wooden cup f'ing cracked, plus I've heard more LCD2 and 3 cup crack stories. A $2000 TOTL luxury product, these two points are deal breakers. Sonically, based on what I've heard, the LCD3F has less resolution than HD650, and resolution is a priority for me. All LCDs seemed to me to have a slow, kind of mellow, mass consumer oriented sound signature.

Actually I made an error. :( And thanks Austin Valentine.

I have owned so many cans I can't keep the model numbers right. I meant the Beyerdynamic T51P not Beyerdynamic T50P as that was not so great sounding.

The T51P was a successor to the DT-1350.
