Just tried that. It works fine when pulse is running, but when set up for exclusive access (quodlibet running alsasink directly through gstreamer, with pasuspender), it still mutes and unmutes between tracks, pauses, etc. It must be at a lower level than pulse, maybe ALSA.

Looking forward to seeing how well it works with my setup once I get a Modi Multibit.

I suspect it's the application loading and unloading gstreamer alsasink as the tracks change as it may be releasing the device when music stops.

Yup, this + plus thinking of getting the HE-adapter as well. Folks have told me ;) that it's not only the power, but the quality that will make or break this. Easy enough to audition when checking out stuff for sale locally, and absolves me from playing roulette with the wallet. There is a slew of old school gear out there if one is patient enough and has a hit list...since we all know some connoisseurs are always on the upgrade warpath, you can get a killer deal for this kind of situation. I ain't a cork sniffer, but when I do, I prefer my single malts :)

Awesome, that sounds sane. You need a beast of a headamp for the HE-4, a normal speaker amp seems to be the favourite approach,.

Oh, and I hope you mean nice smoky/peaty single malt :)

I am using the Z97 Maximus Hero VII. It seems it doesn't have that feature, however there is an interesting option with HDMI. Would a device work that "extracts" the audio from HDMI to coax out?

    Take a look:

    Emphasis is mine.

Properly implemented, S/PDIF should be isolated in the source (generally via a transformer), but more often than not this isn't done - particularly with PC motherboards. So you run the risk of ground loops, as well as the nasty electrical hash that's like to wind up on the wire if it's coming straight out of the PC. Which may, or may not, result in some issues similar to those found with USB.

Only way to see how it works for you is to try it ... it is, at least, cheap and easy to do.

One more question for @Abhishek Chowdhary - Probably a dumb question but what do you have your groundwire going to? Since the coaxial is just one wire under the jacket and shielding I assume you send the signal wire straight to that but then what happens with the ground?

Yeah, I agree that that seems to be what it's doing. I don't know of any apps that would keep a constant stream out when nothing is playing, though. I tried audacious, too, which I had installed and also lets you specify a specific output device. It did the same thing.

Can one of the mods pulls the spdif header stuff into it's own thread? I think it deserves its own discussion and for easier searching later.

So that's on the foil, right? Does that actually ground it?

Grounds the shielding to the source ground (your motherboard).

Yes, but you'd introduce more devices into the chain. Something like this converts to coax out: https://www.monoprice.com/product?p_id=10251

Has anyone gotten a CIEM completely reshelled due to fit issue?

I've had a channel imbalance in my K10's, especially in the bass, this whole time. They are in Noble's labs now, and drivers test fine. So I'm assuming fit is the issue (it is a little loose on the left compared to the perfect right) and since it's nothing too tight, I'm guessing the only option is a reshell of that ear?

Just looking for some confirmation that my logic is sound, before I get too deep into all of this. Also is this typically something you pay for?

    I
I think so. Under the metal foil there are some copper threads as well. I've connected both foil and copper threads to the spdif ground.
    Tried and tested, It Works!!

If it's still quite new Noble should allow you to reshell for free. I know some brands have a 30 days free refit thing, not sure if Noble has it.

Alternatively raid someone with nail polish and apply a few layers of clear coat to the left side.

Seconded, Noble will do this for you. They won't like if you put nail polish on it, so don't do that.

No not new, I've had it for almost a year. I think it's more of an issue of how the nozzle is pointed within my ear canal, which is why I'm thinking reshell
