I'd still get Gungnir Multibit as DAC. Schiit could have made Gungnir Multibit 6000 USD and it would still be difficult to get a DAC sonically better for the price. NAD M51 is a good choice too. I believe the UK pricing for NAD gear is much better than in the US.

BHA-1 is a worthy consideration, but I believe the balanced inputs are actually summed before the volume control before being split off again (there is a small penalty in resolution because of this). The V281 seems awfully expense. Mass manufactured solid-state amps at V281 power levels should never cost anywhere near 2000 USD. Although the V281 does have a lot of cool knobs, buttons, and inputs.

If you feel the HD800 might be too bright, you might also want to consider the HD650.

Is true. Good DAC. Cheaper in the UK. Good deals on used around.

My experience is limited to the ancient c. 2007 2MOVE, which was my portable amp for a loooooong time. Great device. I believe the -move amps were predecessors to what is now the -step series, someone correct me if that is wrong. Anyway, it was excellent for what I needed at the time, sonics were solid, but the Leckerton UHA-6S is better in every conceivable way (though I respect that "ease of use" isn't a fair fight). If sonics are similar (which I would suppose they are) then the pcstep is probably "solid" but not "amazing". Some of the Europods can probably weigh in with more authority.

    Hey Marv,

Good to hear from you and thanks to both of you for the advice and links. Gungnir Multibit it is then. I was lucky to meet Dan Clark & Mark (from Electromod) at Canjam London. Mark has a loaner program for Schiit gear: try for a week at home for a fee of $30 so I'm going to check Gungnir Multibit out.

I'm hesitant to get the Rag due to what I've read about massive heat output and even the volume knob getting hot, I'm a bit worried about longevity.

Another option is the Auralic Taurus MK2 but I don't think it has a gain adjustment which is a deal breaker.

In terms of cans would you agree that the TH900 is a better buy than either Ether? I already ordered the one for $970 (open box, like new), the deal was too good to resist.

I will buy the HD600/HD650 at some point, they go for around $300 here so very easy pick up at the price. I'm leaning towards the HD600 as it's supposed to be brighter.

    Cheers.

Rthomas, if you're looking to save cash on amp, Jan Meier's "Corda Rock" is really quite decent, tiny, and doesn't get hot at all. I used to have one and it didn't make my DT-880 or HE-400 overbright (or brighter than they were, anyway).

    hello,

would your opinion of the Lyr 2 / Bifrost change with the advent of the Bifrost Multibit?

especially if one cannot foresee going balanced at any time in the future.

I'd rather go Gungnir Multibit + ECP Torpedo or Valhalla 2 with HD6x0. I'm sure all of you know how close the Gungnir Multibit is to the Yggdrasil by now.

I know those feels. Stuck in mid fi land with an assfrost combo, and a substantial upgrade would require me to spend about 3x the amount I forked out for my stack. At least I do have Bimbo to look forward to.

After that, I'll probably save up for awhile for Gungnir Multibit and some amp (Mjolnir 2 or BW, we'll see). In the meantime, I'll just enjoy the tunes.

We discussed a similar point here. There really does seem to be a gap, with fewer standout products between entry level and lower top-tier. If I could do it over, I'd avoid the gap altogether. But, as Pyruvate suggested, Bimbo (or, as I like to call it, Bumblebee) could change our notions of mid-fi.

There are way too many choices. My wallet can only support (hope for) trickle-down tech.

Has anybody measured the Ragnarok? Tyll was supposed to but the unit had to be sent back due to some issues.

TH-900 has very good clarity with hard hitting bass. Treble can be a little harsh...

HD650's strengths are not crystal clear sound and hard hitting bass (HD650 lacks low bass extension). You should be all set with HE-6 and a big amp.
