The DAC Advice Thread

I'm going to build a bedrooms system (again - so far I have always reverted back to a DAP, convience trumping ultimate quality and all) around a SW51 I just got in from a member here. Mercury to get bits to DAC, but what about DAC? Thinking I will start with the WaveDream...no seriously MIMIR. Can anyone think why an ESS dac with Burrito Combo filter would be a no-go as far a synergy with SW51 w/ HP's Jar650, Atrium, and Utopia?

 

Modded MMB1. It's a BF2 OG without the sloppy bass.

 

I don't remember if you had time to listen to the SW51 with the Wavedream when we were at Austin a few years ago. But that combo worked well for almost every single person that heard it (both SBAF members and non).

 

Not only did I get to hear it, I rate that combo one of the best I have ever heard with my Utopia OG. Heck, if I was only going to listen to Utopia I would seriously contemplate trading other gear in (DNA, etc.) for this synergistic combo.

 

There's an OG Matrix X Sabre DAC available locally at 350€... Wondering how much better or different it could be compared to Modius ESS? Other DACs I know well is the Modi multibit, Modi 3, and the Zen DAC Signature. Does anyone have a clue?

Update: dude said I can have it for 250€ xD, I am just gonna grab it and see what the thing is all about. Can't go wrong at this point!

 

I owned one for years, it is a very good dac and especially at that price. It was favored by me over a few Schiit dacs back in the day, like the Gungnir and Modi Multibit. Also better than my Lavry priced around $800. You do have to be okay with its sound signature though.
