Late to this thread, but In-N-Out is one of the most overrated places I've ever eaten. Their burgers are generally good, but the bread and ingredients are literally almost identical to Culver's. I dare anyone to tell the difference. Their fries are literally just naked potatoes, absolutely terrible with zero flavor. McDonald's fries slaughters In's in every category.

I ended up eating a lot of In-N-Out in Phoenix, AZ and I'm convinced the only reason they have so much business is because a) Phoenix food in general sucks hard and b) it's the only place to eat late, because the entire town shuts down at 8 pm. It also has that "drive-in" vibe, which I guess a lot of people like.

And yeah, the shakes are better at In-N-Out, but that's not hard to beat McDonald's shakes which generally taste like Cool Whip.

So I am definitely NOT surprised (and happy for confirmation) that McD's in Japan is better.

I don’t understand the point of this part. That Culver’s imitates in n out? They both have pretty good burgers if I recall (have had plenty of in n out but I usually get the fish at culver’s). Both have better burgers than most other fast food joints so either is a win over McD’s etc.. if you’re getting some fast food. Neither should be compared to a quality non fast food burger.

On weight loss, I used to weigh 145-150 in my 20s. Now at 31, my weight has gained just because of lack of exercise and generally crappy eating with huge portions. This has led to a lot of just in general feeling fat and tired all the time (though everyone around me considers me skinny)

About 2 months ago, I weighed in at 184 and decided it had to end (my best friend was going through the same thing). Turned to a more vegetable/vegan based diet on a more regular basis, started living on salads, and having smaller portions. And drinking more water.

Now I'm down to about 170 (yay!) and have started working out. Jogging/treadmill for 45 minutes a day is my goal, and I'll probably start doing crunches/weights again. The issue is that I have really no one to work out with, so it's really a struggle to force myself into the gym because it's so boring. (even while listening to music/podcasts/Zombies, Run!)

The eating part has been pretty easy though, because I do have about 3 close friends who are into really healthy vegetarian/vegan food, so the support is there. Also starting figuring out the joys and conveniences of crock-pots. My dad is really into a Mediterranean diet too, so when I visit, it's fairly easy to get lean foods.

My brother is huge into body building and health, but we don't associate much. Either way, my goal is drop to about 150 or so and gradually start putting on muscle (not Hulk style).

It sounds like I was badmouthing Culver's (which I wasn't). I was really just badmouthing In-N-Out's reputation as being this amazing, out of this world burger experience, when it's not. You can get the same experience from Culver's, which knocks down In-N-Out's rep as an exclusive experience. Really, either place is fine for burgers. I actually prefer Steak n Shake for everything over both Culver's and In-N-Out. (though I hear Freddy's is almost identical to Steak n Shake at twice the price)

Culver's destroys In-N-Out for for french fries (not hard to do, and Culver's fries are about on par with regular diner fries, so nothing special at all), and their shakes are about on par with each other (good quality).

Re: McDonald's....you gotta really pick and choose for quality off their menu.

Tommy's and In-N-Out burgers are great. I have been eating at In-N-Out (and Tommy's) since the mid 60's. Maybe it's an acquired taste developed over time, but there is no burger joint I would rather eat at than Tommy's and In-N-Out is a real close second. In-N-Out burgers are amazing. Ask anyone, who used to live in So Cal and moved away, where they go for their first burger. It's probably In-N-Out.

Burger King's fries went immediately downhill after they got rid of Mr. Potato Head as their spokesperson.

I like Freddy’s a lot though I don’t recall it being super expensive. We had one close to my house when I lived in the US. They make their patties thin to maximize the char to meat ratio. It’s a good flavor. I like the fry sauce too. Also, I like their very thin fries.

In N Out animal style burger is very good IMO. I cannot agree with you in finding a lot to hate about them when there are so many worse fast food joints. In Waco, Texas we didn’t have a Culver’s (though I’ve eaten there many times in Wisconsin, Austin and Houston) but we did have Freddy’s and In N Out which both stood head and shoulders above Whataburger, McD’s, Wendy’s, Burger King, and the other chain fast food. We also had Five Guys but it wasn’t convenient to me and no drive thru. Also, for a place that hypes their fries that much Five Guys fries are not that great.

Get some Taco Bell soft shell tacos and put some McD's fries on them. Delicious.

The one time I had 5 Guys, I got a bag of fries and drove about 7-10 minutes to work. Got the fries in my mouth only to find out they were very soggy.

I was told by co-workers you have to eat them immediately when they're handed to you. *shrug* I haven't ever tried since. I can't comment on their burgers....I was only ever interested in their fries, since I'm a fry whore.

I'm more into deli/chicken sandwiches and subs than I am burgers.

I don’t touch Taco Bell with a 10 foot pole. Too many good taquerias Andover fast food I would go to Taco Bueno nearby instead.

Pretty much any fresh cut potato will get soggy from being steamed up in the to go bag. Mcdonalds fries are generally the exception (though they still go soggy after a while) due to all the chemicals they add to the mix. For the record, I love Five Guys. I always order ATW, hold the mushrooms, add relish and japalenos. Bon Appetit!

Speaking of taco bell, I love fries supreme. It's apparently not offered in the USA, aside from a few states... I feel so sorry for you guys. For the record, it's basically the same thing as a nacho supreme, but on top of fries instead of nachos.

I totally understand the Taco Bell hate. But Taco Bell is cheap, nearby, and open until 4 am. We have very limited options for dirt cheap Mexican around here. (and I honestly like it, especially with their Fresco style which helps with my diet) Sure, we can get good-ish Mexican, but it's almost all sit-down restaurants. We had a really decent place right nearby that was open 24 hours for fairly cheap that served HUGE portions but they shut down after a year.

The one problem with the nearby Taco Bell is you can't order anything with rice after midnight there or you're liable to break a tooth.

When you get five guys carry out you have to leave the bag open, they will still be warm after a short drive but not soggy. We used to get five guys daily when I worked at the auto parts store and whoever picked it up knew to leave the fry bags open. I love their Cajun fries, and the burgers are the best fast food burgers I've ever had, and I've tried all the big names.

I would have thought Phoenix would have a lot of good taquerias. I’ve been there a few times visiting family but I didn’t take notice. I was so spoiled for good tacos in the US and I seriously miss that here in Asia.

I guess I meant soft, not soggy. Though really, if you do steam the fries more than normal, by sticking the to go bag inside of a plastic bag, they will be pretty damn soft and borderline soggy after 30 minutes or so. I always go to five guys when I'm downtown, there's a spot right at the corner of Yonge and Dundas. It's a damn shame that HMV closed down, I used to love going there to peruse the bluray section, now that I'm hella into audio, I would have totally perused their cd and lp section... sadly they're no more.

Speaking of this type of thing....remember in the 90s when McDonald's served personal size pizzas? I grew up in IL and no one else I talk to from outside the area remembers this. I remember it was really decent, but I was a kid so most pizza brands are delicious in one way or another.

I'm seeing a Filipina and she was the one who recommended I try it. None around here though, I'd have to drive to Illinois to get one.

Huh, do report back with impressions when you get around to it! I'm always curious to hear what other people think of food I'm familiar with. Don't worry about holding back either, I'm not as protective of fast food chains as others :p

Yeah, @Lyer25 wants to know what it’s like to date a Filipina.
