Clearly, you read neither the rules nor the intent of the original post. I'll do you a favor and give you a week off to do those things and come back later.

There's a saying here to "lurk moar" and get to know the community better. You seem like a smart guy so you can figure out what that means.

@richard51 is old school here, he was off on the anti vibration material tangent back in the day, hence the custom title, lol.

Would the mods consider doing a thread clean-up? There was threatening to be some good info for newbies here before things got sidetracked.

I can agree with that in general, but thinking about it now, maybe jumping straight into the deep end without first experiencing the budget recommendations like those suggested in this thread will minimize appreciation of what the chain-end transducers offer, as subtle or profound as it could be perceived to be. In other words, I'm in the "it's all about the journey" camp.

They nailed sir Richard to the cross for 7 days and 7 nights. And for what? What was his crime? Refusing to kneel. A true martyr for good sound...

I'm not the one who banned him. I echo 80% of what he had to say, it was just how he said it. some took it too seriously and started to strawman his points, he got defensive, the rest is history

The issue wasn't his point (which has some validity), its that he made it over, and over, and over, and over again. A complete hi-jack of this thread. (and over again)

I never studied audio history. How long after that was the ordinary headband developed? All that stuff looks extremely uncomfortable. Still, I expect there is yester-century flagship or two among them.

I totally applauded his first post, but things somehow went very bad from there. I hope he'll be back.

The thread posited advising a beginner. I assume that to mean someone who is interested in listening to something better than the common-kiddy stuff. That system may be end-game for them. There is no assumption that they are setting foot on a future game of tweaks and upgrades. Or even taking up a hobby.

I don't think of audio as a hobby. Eben though I bought the magazines, pre-internet, and then joined the forums, went to listening sessions, etc etc, and probably had some theoretical idea of what I'd buy given less limited finance. Of course, over the years I made changes, some of which were improvements. Very occasional changes: I lived with most of my gear for years.

Mind you, from the beginning, I would have been very happy to have people other than the guys in the shop (who did a good job) to answer the question: "I have this much to spend, what should I buy?"

And if I was a beginner, lurking today, I'd be happy to find this thread. Until it got pseudo-intelectual-religious.

No. He was nailed for not understanding the very obvious implied context of this thread and turning it into a shitshow for three pages instead of providing something useful for its intended audience.

First of all, I do not disagree with finding tried and true vintage gear. Lots of great vintage gear out there. However, this approach is most unhelpful to newbies / lurkers looking a good sounding budget setup for the following reasons (a summary of what others have already said):
    1. Well known good vintage gear is often expensive and priced way more than it should be, and by this does not meet the "budget" criteria.
    2. Vintage gear is often in various states of disrepair, despite statements of excellent condition, reconditioned, modded to be better than new, detailed photos, etc. Normal people / lurkers / newbies are not going to want to deal with this. I've learned this lesson myself a million times. I know my way around a soldering iron and solder sucker, but the truth is that my time is worth a lot of money.
    3. Vintage gear is hard to find. Again, normal people / lurkers / newbies are not going to want to deal with this. They want something that is easily accessible instead of having to being Indiana Jones of audio.
    4. Upon closer examination a good deal of vintage gear impressions are based on nostalgia and do not meet expectations when compared directly to known good new gear. The problem is that no one ever posts I got this piece of vintage gear and it sucks balls.
    5. Asking normal people / lurkers / newbies to study audio history or research ancient gear is nonsense.
We need to have a broader view of the audience that isn't limited to audio incels who have the time to dick around with shit. Being an audio incel is not winning. It's losing.

    P.S.

Even with used gear, I wouldn't recommend anything difficult to obtain.

    P.S.S.

I'd hardly put the K340 in the category as timeless or good vintage gear by consensus. Unique or interesting perhaps. There is a reason why some vintage stuff is underrated.

If crosses are vintage, what's the modern equivalent?
