    I'll give this a shot:

    Bill Evans- Easy to love
Coltrane - My favorite things, Giant steps
Davis - Sketches of Spain, Bitches brew
    Mingus - Epitaph, Ah Um
    Ahmad Jamal - Ahmad's Blues
Ella Fitzgerald - I got it bad
    Erroll Garner - Misty
Louis Armstrong - Satch blows the blues
    Oscar Peterson - Night train
    Roy Fukui - Scenery
Sidney Bechet - The fabulous Sidney Bechet

Hard to settle on just those 10 but for now I'll go with that.

based purely on what I find myself listening to the most, and in no particular order:

Dizzy Gillespie - Live at Royal Festival Hall
    Dave Brubeck - Time Out
Charlie Parker - Bird, The Savoy Recordings
Bill Evans - Waltz for Debby
Horace Silver - Doin the Thing
Monk & Coltrane - at Carnegie Hall
Maynard Ferguson - On a High Note
Phil Woods - Live from the Showboat
    Sonny Rollins - Saxophone Colossus
Arne Domnerus - Jazz at the Pawnshop

This was a lot harder than I thought it would be... I left so many out (Miles Davis, Eric Dolphy, Oscar Peterson, Art Pepper, etc, etc) but then I actually limited myself to 10 albums, unlike @murphythecat and @elmoe... both coming in with 14.

    Very hard to do, but...

    Kenny Burrell--Midnight Blue
Anouar Brahem--Le Pas du Chat Noir (this album is incredible--"haunting" doesn't do it justice)
Bill Evans--the Village Vanguard double set
Dave Holland Quartet--Conference of the Birds
Carla Bley Big Band--Big Band Theory (why doesn't all big band sound like this?)
Gil Evans--Out of the Cool (or this?)
    Coltrane--A Love Supreme
Art Pepper Meets the Rhythm Section
Mingus--Ah Um (and/or Black Saint and the Sinner Lady)
Miles Davis--A Tribute to Jack Johnson (just b/c I've been into lately but any number of Miles albums could be on such a list)

Great list! The Akinmusire is one of my favorite recent albums. That Chick record kills, and you're reminding me to dig out the Kenny Wheeler.

I’m still a newcomer here so I’ll just add a few gems that haven’t been mentioned yet:

Duke Ellington, Such Sweet Thunder (or Money Jungle, with Max Roach and Charles Mingus)
    Hank Mobley, Roll Call
    Herbie Hancock, Maiden Voyage

Not strictly an album or all that high fidelity, but I'd like to speak up for a King Oliver compilation. Thanks for all the recommendations everyone, that's this weekend's entertainment all lined up.

When I try to select the "best," I'm biased by fame. Instead, I'll take ten that I never tire of listening to, no repeated leaders:

Dave Holland Quartet: Conference of the Birds (the album that got me into jazz: freedom, lyricism, surprise)
Miles Davis: In a Silent Way (ripples in the wind)
Thelonious Monk: Brilliant Corners (edgy, subverting set rhythms, a key to modern jazz)
Vijay Iyer Trio: Accelerando (Iyer comes into his own language)
Marc Ribot: Silent Movies (solo guitar miniatures, each painting a different scene)
Miles Okazaki: Trickster (Okazaki leads a dense, electric, driving set)
Charles Lloyd Quartet: Jumping the Creek (Lloyd at his most lyrical, the "Ne Me Quitte Pas" version that opens it is for the ages)
    David VIrelles: Mbókò (Caribe magic)
Wadada Leo Smith: America's National Parks (a fierce portrait of a varied tragic landscape)
Paul Motian Trio: I Have the Room Above Her (intimate, conversational, never formulaic)

LMAO - are you just making sure everyone is paying attention? I can't believe they even had a Greatest Hits album (although, I liked them in high school)

    -------edit----------
To everyone... great lists, lots of new things for me to listen to... that's why I love these kinds of threads. Thanks for starting @murphythecat

The top ten changes from time to time but this is what I've got currently:

    Bill Evans Waltz for Debby
    Dave Brubeck: Time Out
    Tomaz Stanko Quartet: December Avenue
Julian Lage: Mount Royal (guitar duo, at times magical)
Tierney Sutton Band: Sting Variations (very dynamic and excellent recording)
Madeleine Peryroux: The Blue Room (reference recording of covers)
Cecile Mclorin Salvant: Womanchild (new jazz vocalist who has a timeless voice)
    Diana Krall: Live in Paris
Patricia Barber: The Cole Porter Mix (much edgier than the Diana Krall stuff)
Norah Jones: Not Too Late (excellent recording and better than Come Away with Me IHO)

I like how @wbass added a few comments after his entries. As I'm going through these list, seeing the comments helps me to determine if these might be something I'm interested in. If the OP is okay with this, I'll a a few comments to my own list. Of course this is for the recordings most people would not know.
