This is insane! Amazing to follow and I hope to hear it one day

This is actually one of the few speakers that Troels published the component values. You could cheap out but it would kinda be hilarious to have $5k in drivers and a $50 crossover

@Cspirou, more like 11k in drivers. That new midrange driver is 2,5k alone. I was following this speaker development, but the prices are crazy :)

I got them a few days ago and I’m putting as many hours into them as I can. I feel the speakers need some more time to fully settle in.

I was most excited to hear what the mid domes could do but the active 15” Ellipticors stole the show for the first few hours of listening. The whole range of drivers seem to be articulation monsters that can start/stop on a dime and seem really resolving.

The A50-IIs seemed really bright, forward, and even etched from the upper mids through top end treble but it seems to be calming down a bit more every day. For now I’m toeing the speakers out farther than I thought was possible and it works well because of how good the dispersion is (thanks @famish99 for the suggestion).

I was pretty happy with the way the rest of my chain played my last speakers but I’m starting to think about what tweaks I might need to make because of the different presentation of these speakers and their ability to reveal what’s upstream. You could say they might sound a bit dry but maybe that just means how clean the output from the Ellipticors are.

This post is mostly just bullshitting until the speakers and my brain burn in more. Will probably report back in a few weeks.

Just put some bathroom tissue over the offending drivers and you should be okay.

The dome mid has much more uniform dispersion vs beaming and breakup typical to large soft mids of cone type (especially your previous paper 8'').
This means on axis they might measure the same, but there are likely much more energy in higher octaves in the room. Treating the walls a bit more can help in this occasion.

I will chime in to say that these speakers are the real deal. It's the most horn-like speaker in terms of liveliness and texture I've heard from a non-horn. I'm hoping that Advan is able to sort out the tone issues with time, but I'm just thinking it needs a healthy amount of breaking in due to the cap monstrosity that is its crossover as well as the drivers itself.

Regarding the toe-out, the baffle reflections are pretty noticeable when the speaker is set on-axis, I recalled Danny Richie using this trick to help with the Brute and it seemed to work pretty well with the A50 as well.

Beautiful speakers. Probably not new info for anyone here, but in my experience film caps sound especially bright for a while when they're brand new. It seems like the higher the voltage rating, the longer the break in as well. Drivers also lean towards bright/brittle side before the suspension loosens up. Hope is not lost. I just use tone controls(gasp shock and horror) for the first few weeks.

Interesting! Can you say more about what baffle reflections sound like / how the toe out addresses that?

Baffle edges become secondary points of radiation. Usually, they cause constructive/destructive interference with the main radiators and muddy up the image. Can't really say if toe-in can help.

Hrodulf addressed the sounds like part, but the toe out causes the reflection to go away from your head and increase the proportion of direct sound vs reflected (since the baffle is smaller on the inner edge) by relying on the even dispersion characteristics of the drivers (allowing you to assume the driver off-axis response is similar to the on-axis, which it practically ends up being).

Aren't diffraction points pretty much omni radiators?

Isn't that more a function of the geometry of the corner/edge and the frequency being radiated?
