In essence for audiophiles it means:
    • Support for new USB 2.0 audio devices
    • 24bit/192kHZ audio via a USB DAC (digital audio converter) – was only 96kHz.
    • 16/24/32-bit PCM audio at up to 384kHz
    • DSD and DoP support for Hi-Res Audio
    • 1-32+ bi-directional channels (not just 2, 2.1, 4, 4,1 etc., channels)
    • Low or no jitter with latency adjustable to 3ms round trip
    • MIDI over USB
    • Multiple clock speeds
    • It should flow to newer Mac and Windows devices as well as mobile devices e.g. USB-C 3.x support

It is too bad that Build 1607 probably will have to be performed. I had to roll back 6 computers because of it.

No flowers for Microsoft for finally getting around to it.

Yes, I'm biased! But reading some of Jason's post over the past couple of years made me realise, prejudiced, yes; wrong, no! Jason has the help-desk stats to show.

"USB Audio over USB Type-C™ allows OEMs to remove the 3.5mm analog audio jack, shaving up to a millimeter off product designs and reducing the number of connectors on a device. Fewer connectors will open the door for innovation in countless ways and make it easier to design waterproof or water-resistant devices."

One less hole to plug when I hose down my computer.

Ding ding ding...Apple owns Beats, Beats owns 60+ odd percent of the headphone market, Apple just killed the headphone jack on a major iDevice. Microsoft gets bit in the ass and finally responds.

In the spirit of full disclosure I work for Microsoft.

Maybe my grandkids will be able to experience USB 3.0 audio...

Well, I wouldn't go as far as saying it killed it. They just placed it on a separate pigtail.

As far as a jack on the phone is concerned, it ain't there no more. That's not just a by-the-way move is what I'm getting at.

Oh, will that allow USB DACs to be driven as class devices without specific manuf's drivers under Windows, finally?
If Microsoft implemented this, and Apple actually got their OpenGL up to date enough to have compute shaders (which are only 4-5 years old), the world might well end.. have a care!
