I just started playing Hades which is a rogue-lite type game from the same developers that made Bastion. It's been a while since a game has hooked me from right from the start. The games aesthetics are beautiful and the voice acting blew me away. I've died about 25 times and each time I've re-spawned the lines (which are all spoken) are different.

It feels like the Zelda, mixed with a Diablo 2, and Dark Souls. You get weapons as you go room to room collecting items to buy more weapons (there are only a handful) but each lends to a different style of play. The gods give you boons to speed up your attack speed, DoTs, deflects, etc. Damn game is a blast.

I know probably nobody plays it, but I play a lot of Critical Ops on iOS. I used to play CSGO but haven't been as often so been playing C Ops which is essentially CSGO for the Ipad. If anyone else plays would love to play together.

I'm about 11 hours in. Still a long way to go, but it's an A+ so far.

Finished today...it's a very very long game if you take your time to observe the scenery closely, which you should. There's so much detail...it's mind-blowing, really.

A gaming masterpiece in my book.

My initial run was on Hard mode, and it was certainly challenging and stressful at certain points. I haven't felt this tense playing a game in ages...if ever.

Finished Last of Us 2. Almost more experience than game, but masterpiece nonetheless. Production value out of this world. Emotionally, still prefer the original Last of Us and its emotional subtlety.

Currently playing Ghost of Tsushima, which is a blast. Not much originality in the gameplay except for its unique art design. Borrows heavily from the best parts of other games, but good example where the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. Open world is mighty impressive and you can pick it up for a short 20min quest (of which there are many) or sit down for a proper story mode quest. Downside is that stealth play is a bit of a joke (compared to a Last of Us or Metal Gear), but it's more fun to play as samurai anyway (parrying is immensely gratifying). Platform puzzles are also bit lame, you can hardly call them puzzles.

    I wish I hadn't given my PS4 away.

What is up with the low rating by some reviewers for Last of Us 2? How is it compared to the original?

It was bombed by fans who hated the story development, hence the massive disparity e.g. on Metacritic of critic vs. fan reviews. There were also things in the trailers that were changed in the final game that further amplified the storyline hate.

Gameplay is more evolved than the original with more options to choose from. Still very linear. More cineastic sequences a la Unchartered that are pretty cool.

The first game had the benefit of being able to create a world and relationships from scratch. Hard for any sequel to emotionally follow on that.

The original was indeed very special. Its main strength is in character development and storyline. As much as I like Uncharted, it was still a notch below Last of Us.

I wanted to watch the reviews, but was afraid of spoilers. I know I will play this one day. Better just close my eyes and ears for now.

Yep, definitely stay away from news or reviews if you plan to play it. I didn't watch any reviews before playing it (and it's pointless after) but as a reviewer, I'd have no idea how to review it without any major spoilers, especially in a video review.

I played Uncharted 4 after Last of Us. Thought it was fun, but a bit superficial and too scripted.

The Last Of Us 2 is technically superior to the original in every way. It's next level stuff.

I understand if the story wasn't as impactful for you, but the type of vitriol it's getting is silly. Personally, I'm on my third playthrough on Survivor mode and I'm amazed at the level of game play and detail. There are so many ways to approach each encounter that I'm still discovering new strategies and hidden gems.

yeah it’s a great game. I hit a brick wall half way through, I think it could have been paced better, but it pays off in the end. It does something that only a video game can do and I don’t think they get enough credit for that. The gameplay is also a lot of fun. By far the best playing game they’ve made.

I should have sold it as soon as I finished but it's still here. I've been contemplating whether I want to get back into it in the new Grounded mode. The original was most immersive in Grounded mode. There's permadeath now too but I'm not man enough for that.

I agree about the technicalities and actually the story being good (too much effort went into it for it not to be), but I also understand the criticism it's getting for over-seasoning with every social issue du décennie. Guess they did leave out the obesity epidemic though. Haven't read previous pages in this thread to see if this has been already talked to death, so if I'm late to the party with my opinion, don't mind me.

From a gameplay perspective, the only thing I can criticize is its scavenging simulator vibe. I was almost getting nauseous and too tired from constantly looking through every f'ing cabinet and drawer in Seattle. It's about as much fun as you would expect it to be in real life. Kudos for making the apocalypse feel like shit though, which I guess it should.

For me the original was a 10/10 while this one was a 9/10 because the whole is greater than the sum of the parts and what not.

Now for the real reason I came into this thread. I finished Bloodborne earlier this year but have still been going back to the OST just because it was so damn memorable. It's my favorite horror vibe OST of all time probably. Favorite track: The Hunter. Runner up: The Hunter's Dream.

Even the OST is damn scary. Reminds me of the game and countless dying and running away.

Wow, thanks for bringing this up. Listening to the soundtrack has never really occurred to me, haha.

It is still, hands down, one of my favorite games of all time.

Small update. Not a lot of time for games but following the industry somedays of the month and occasional games few times a month. Recently have been on Insurgency Sandstorm and the new COD Warzone (idk about that, quite good but not a huge fan of the genre.)

Last one I got a couple days ago was Escape From Tarkov. Well, I just tried it for like 1h, but I can tell this is a quality game. It has a lot of interesting details, good sound design, decent graphics (need powerful PC, a lot of RAM). It seems to have some depth so you actually have to think how to get around in this. I guess getting out of the round successfully is quite rewarding. I am a starter so a lot of things to figure out. Well something like that is what I have been looking for in games, so that's great.

2020 is probably going to be quite good for people who have time to try out the big titles.

    1. BG3
    2. Diablo 4 (was it 2021?)
    3. Cyberpunk 2077
    4. AC Vallhalla
    5. Wasteland3
    6. Bloodlines 2
