No Man's Sky. It is arguably a better game now than they even promised before the disaster of a launch. They keep doing tons of free content updates and mini expansions. They went from a laughing stock in the industry to being one of the most respected.

So I beat the last 4-phase boss (Sword Saint) for the true ending of Sekiro last night. This is my 2nd From Software game, and I think I benefitted from having my "cherry popped" by Bloodborne first. I knew what to expect in terms of the frustrating parts: constant dying as you learn the mechanics and shitty guidance.

And I felt this despite the fact that they did a better job with both aspects in Sekiro. I don't know if it's a personal thing, but the mechanics and controls of Sekiro felt 2nd nature. In fact, they were so deeply imprinted, I was able to jump back into the game after a 2-month break and reflexively parry/press attacks, etc. That is totally rare for me, because I usually need to look at controller maps, sometimes even after a 3-4 week break.

In terms of guidance, I thought the beginning of the game was better than Bloodborne. You had the practice guy at the start to show you the ropes of sword combat, and you had a fairly linear path to take through the first 3 or so levels. Unfortunately, after that, Miyazaki returns to form and you have a deeply branched world with cryptic and mistranslated lore nuggets that are supposed to piece together 'where to go' hints. Well, they don't, and I knew not to waste time with that and to look up "recommended" progression routes instead. This is especially important because wandering into the wrong area might make a boss fight way more difficult than it has to be. Which brings me to...

Boss fights, this game is a stream of 41 bosses in total. This is why you love (and hate) any From Software game. All of them are challenging or instructive in their own way, but the toughest for me was the 2nd Owl battle. I had the toughest time with hunters in Bloodborne and I think it's because they have the same moves and counters as you do, which also applies to Owl. I also had to learn not to be put off by Sekiro's logarithmic damage system: initial strikes barely do anything, but damage is easier to inflict as you go on into sword rallies. I think the Owl battle was 7-10m of intense-as-f**k sword fighting. I also had a much easier time once I connected my PS4 to a Samsung gaming monitor which does a better job with motion than my LG OLED (maybe I'm on the wrong setting?). This is probably one of the only times in my entire gaming career where hardware was more limiting than my skill.

Sword Saint was maybe 10-15m, but easier for me since they basically give you a football field to run around in (I'm not sure why - the last boss should be harder and you should have less space to work with). Clearly I'm a masochist, haha. What I'm trying to say is, I enjoyed the heck out of this game, and it was the perfect way to end the PS4 era. It's the last title I'll be playing on it. I don't plan on getting a PS5 since it's hard to find time to game in general, but just because these From Software games have been so satisfying, I might try out Elden Ring or the next Sekiro on my computer when they come out.

I'm thinking of trying demon's souls remake or nioh 2 as my first souls-like. I don't think I can handle 30fps as a primarily PC-first person. I could also run Sekiro as it looks like there's a 60fps patch.

I finished fenyx rising on PC and am in the middle of the first Ori game. I figure I'll knock these two out and see about a souls-like with miles morales sprinkled in for a break.

I really enjoyed Ori and the blind forest. I got about halfway through the 2nd game and cancelled my Xbox game pass for PC sub, so I need to buy that when it's on sale.

Right now I'm playing Borderlands 3. Picked up the ultimate edition on steam for $50. Very fun game. Easily the best in the series as far as gameplay goes. Story-wise I think it's fine. It has some great moments and some meh moments. As far as the DLCs go, so far I've only completed the Handsome Jackpot Heist, which was pretty awesome. I waited to do the DLCs until I hit 65, which I did about 3/4 through True Vault Hunter Mode (new game +).

I'm playing Zane, with a kill-skill build (Nuclear Winter 2.0) and he just absolutely shreds everything with the right weapon. I mainly use a M6 Hellwalker and M6 Hellshock. I need a better corrosive weapon for armored enemies though.

@sphinxvc Overall, I prefer the setting of Bloodborne and the mechanics of Sekiro. But, they're both amazing games.

To beat a game 4 times, do all the endings, get Platinum, and STILL want to go back to it says a lot.

The new Reflection of Strength and Gauntlet of Strength settings in Sekiro are great if you just want to go on a boss-battle binge.

Just bought Resident Evil Village on PC. Installing right now.

Anyone else playing this? This should be good. Haven't played anything for a loong time. Could use a break from work.

Although I don't put much trust in press score at Metacritic, user score is a different story. People really dig RE8, so you should have a blast.

I think this is a blend of RE4 and RE7, probably more on RE4, which I don't mind at all. Both are them are great in their own way.

Just finished downloading. Gonna kill some zombies now :)

Ah, you're a man of culture then

If I had to name just one RE I consider as best, RE4 would easily get my vote. It's not even about horror vibe (more action than horror tbh) but sheer amount of time I played this game. Even writing about it makes me want to play it again :D

Village has been pretty cool so far, looks sick even in semi HDR on the Samsung G7, def a game that commands a strong contrast performance of the display, looks amazing on OLED too. Some of the best textures I've ever seen in a video game. Gameplay may not appeal to all RE purist but I like it a lot.

I def get RE4 vibes thrown in with some RE7. I found RE after 4 to be going to far into a different direction but REV is more of the hybrid we needed. More DLC of the big women please

That's what most males into RE would now want :D

On a side note, Biomutant shapes up to be a very enjoyable game.

I assume you mean from the previews? I preordered because I want to support this kind of thing but it is disconcerting that the press hasn't had any hands on time yet. I'll be watching intently when the press embargo lifts on the 24th.

I never played Mass Effect and I see there is a remake available now. Is it worth picking up?

Yes, as long as you are patient with it. Not quite an RPG, not quite a shooter. The first game had the best story and atmosphere, but was almost broken in many gameplay ways. The remaster has made it much better in that regards, but it still is rough compared to the second two and any modern shooter. I first played them several years after the third came out and it is easily my favorite PC series ever despite the jankiness. You don't have to be a completionist, but the more time you spend talking to your squad mates and doing any related missions, the better an experience you will have.

I've been watching a few Twitch streams since I'm okay with spoilers. Doesn't seem bad but I admittedly haven't played much Resident Evil
