The VPI jig seemed most similar to Lofgren B when I printed out Conrad Hoffman's Arc Template generator and compared it. It's all about tradeoffs. The VPI alignment chases lower inner groove distortion (where there is usually more of a problem) for higher outer groove distortion. No need to waste money on Dr. Feikart protractor when a few cents of paper and ink will do the job.

Spindle to pivot distance is 250mm for the 10.5 arm on the Classic 1. You can try the three different alignments if the VPI jig doesn't work. Each has its advantages and disadvantages.

I'd hate to send the poor bastard into a tail spin over which alignment is best, when it sounds like either the cartridge is defective or the alignment is grossly off.

I don't see how. Does not the $259 Feikaert alignment jig that you recommended also offer Baerwald, Stevenson, and Lofgren alignments? Except for $258.95 more than a piece of paper and ink?

Just trying to help the dude save money. TTs are a money pit already. Unnecessary accessories, albeit nice, make things even worse.

The VPI jig works perfectly fine for what it was intended. Many VPI owners here can attest to that. Besides, OP already assessed that cart was likely defective.

I've never tried a printout for alignment, so can't comment. The VPI jig does work perfectly fine. My problem with it is that the slider piece has some play so you never know if you're right on the money or just a few mm off. For someone like me with slight OCD thats enough to drive ya nuts!

Thanks again for the help guys. It really is appreciated. I had all but given up on this table until I started f'ing around with anti skate. I think I've settled on using the device without any weight and I have made sure the fishing line is straight and parallel. When the arm is balanced this gives a nice slow and steady skate towards the outside of the table which is how I think it should be. I'm still using a cheap ass MM cart so I'm not expecting miracles and I'm still getting some sibilance but I believe this is more to do with the shitty elliptical stylus than a setup issue. I'm going to stick with it for now and eventually get myself an AT33PTG/II or similar to really test out the performance.
