Which watch would spend $5000 on?
    Omega?
    Grand Seiko?
    used Rolex DateJust?

If I was thinking about resale value, then the Rolex.

If I was thinking what I'd really desire on my wrist, then Omega.

If I was thinking about reliability, then Seiko.

^ hard question to answer - a bit like asking "what headphone" to spend $5k on without considering amp, dac, source, cables, etc. or knowing what your use case will be.

Do you have a preference for watch size, look (traditional vs modern, busy face vs simple face), color? Dress watch vs tool watch vs casual vs etc.? Any must haves or can't haves? Special use cases or applications (ex sit at home/office all day with watch vs work as a mechanic)? Are you adverse to high maintenance costs? Also what part of NC do you live in - shouldn't be a huge issue in the $5k price range, but for example some watches are very hard to service in some areas due to lack of parts.

That or if you just see something really jump out at you, ignore the above, buy that one.

I wear a Omega Seamaster Professional (yeah, the Quartz one) daily. I have a solar Sieko as a spare. Just thinking about that Titanium Grand Sieko or ?

At this price range I would recommend going used on all three, not just because of resale value but because there's little point to you taking the depreciation hit (unless you want bigger and better things at a particular AD) and some of Grand Seiko's most interesting models are limited releases that are pretty much only available on the preowned market.

Now, a few considerations - the titanium GS is the most well finished and (in Spring Drive form) the most accurate of the bunch but they tend to be fairly dressy and shiny, and the polishing takes on scratches a bit more easily than the SMP's brushed look.

Do you care about the bracelet? Rolex is still probably the best at the bracelet game and you'll have to figure out how the other two feel on your wrist. Although if you really like the quartz SMP, an auto SMP seems like the natural upgrade to that.

I'll also nominate the JLS Polaris and the Nomos Zuirch, which are probably my two favorite steel watches in this price range. Something a little different.

What Zhanming said about buying used.

Based on your existing stuff, I'd say get whatever Omega or GS jumps out the most at you between $3-6k in addition to stuff mentioned above. Also add on a few Zenith and Tudor watches if those appeal to you - note I haven't owned these myself, but have seen enough of them in person.

Yes genuine Rolex bracelets can't be beat for quality and feel on the wrist. All I had to do to size was remove a screw from the link. Simple, none of the pin and collar fuss with Seikos. I miss the one Rolex I owned but I am too cheap now to buy one back, even used. I would rather put disposable income into other hobbies.

I really like the JLC Polaris... then I realized the reason I like it is that it's an upscale version of the typical blue dial Seiko FFF mod that I have on my wrist...

I am thinking that this might be the one. It's dressier than my black dial Seamaster. Later I think a Rolex DateJust with a Jubilee band, but used, not new. 24CB0845-1369-4D86-9EA0-E3084A976815.png

Excellent choice. AD's will usually do up to 25% off MSRP on new Omega's, if you can find one that also sells Rolex you should be able to get a DJ at discount or maybe get yourself on a shortlist for a Sub.

I have a thing for no-date watches, and the Railmaster fits that bill nicely:

Back in the day I used to spend a lot of time on Watch-U-Seek and owned a lot of really nice watches. I eventually figured out that unless you’re a collector looking to build a pedigreed collection or someone crazy enough to think watches are investments, the only thing that really matters is what you like. Nobody other than other watch nuts (ie 99.999% of the world) could give a crap.

The big weakness with GS as someone else alluded to is the bracelets. They just aren’t as nice as the modern Tudors, Rolexes and Omegas. On the bright side, they are comfortable. The problem with Omegas is they tend to be fairly top heavy and don’t have a really great degree of adjustability to the bracelets so comfort can be somewhat hit or miss. Tudor and Rolex both manage adjustability better, but the bigger and heavier the watch, the more important it is to get the fit right.

Movement wise The Tudor MT, Omega Master Chronometer and GS high beat movements will outperform every Rolex except the the one in the DJ41 (unless they’ve started using it in more than just that model) but they’re all pretty accurate and durable.

Purchased the Omega I pictured in this thread and a lightly used women's Rolex DateJust this morning for my wife.
$3900 for Omega and $4000 for Rolex. Now I am broke again with no extra cash except for tubes. Doesn't matter. All systems are as good as I can use.

Today I got my very first watch as a gift.

This is supposedly the entry level watch in Rolex's current lineup. I'm a total noob when it comes to watches, so even if you ask me for a review, I don't even know where to start.

Any tips or suggestions as a watch owner would be greatly appreciated.

Beautiful watch Songmic, and fairly reasonably priced by Rolex standards. There’s not too much you need to know other than check the time against a high accuracy source and then check it again a week later to get an idea of how accurate it is on your wrist. If it’s off by more than 4 s/d you may want to go back to the dealer and have them adjust it for you. Get it serviced every 10 years or sooner if it starts losing time. Finally, do not start looking at watch forums. I can guarantee that you will end up with a bunch more watches if you do.

That is a great gift - wear it, let it show it's wear unapologetically. Pay some attention to getting it serviced and it will last a lifetime.
