I was lucky enough to get out for some more live music yesterday, this time with @Pharmaboy seeing Oz Noy with Will Lee and Anton Fig live at the Falcon in Marlborough NY. An amazing evening.

Here's "Get Down" with Will Lee, John Medeski & Kieth Carlock

Yes, that was a great show, including maybe the best encore I've ever heard--Oz Noy trio covering the Beatles, "Eight Days a Week," with Will Lee on vocals. Hearing Oz play those monster chords, then a blazing solo...madhouse rock 'n' roll.

Keith Carlock is a monster drummer. Saw him with Steely Dan a few years back--an extremely tight, strong group, but there were moments where he just sat the other guys down.

Here's another Keith + Oz cut that shows what Keith can do. Describing this as "keeping time" hardly does it justice--the man is a human metronome moving at 3X speed.

Daft Punk - "Random Access Memories"

Long days, extra stress and making time to enjoy what remains of the day is a chore. Daft Punk is needed badly.

P.S. Yeah about my HTML-style post, my old laptop is struggling with HTML-5 and its media support. It still runs smooth enough but until I have a newer workhorse, it will do.

There's too many men, too many people, making too many problems... and not much love to go around...

The production across this whole album is just great. It's packed with all of these pristine twists and turns, as though it's always 'breaking out'.

Our tree is up, so it was time for the music to get into the Christmas spirit:

Shout outs to whoever posted this album a while before the thread shift. I wish I could remember who you are. It is a pure sonic joy. You really have to pay attention to keep up, but fortunately the boppy rhythm makes it an easy move. There's a lot of that on the album.

I'm appreciating pop more these days. It's an area I've ignored for years. Little did I know there are all of these little plateaus of weirdo future party music out there that are all about exploring sonic pallets, using the pop format as a springboard to all of this fresh-sounding genre and era bending. It's funny because in a sense it never goes anywhere, but it always feels like it's on the move. And then when you think you know the pattern it goes in a more progressive direction.

Eh, it is all still very hit or miss for me. Even the stuff I like, I can't always, or sometimes even often go in for. But it's always interesting. In a sense, they're concept albums. The concept just heavily emphasizes deep, dynamic, interlocking sonic themes. I kind of have to want to turn my brain on (and my own expectations and desires off) to fully appreciate it. There's a mode you develop as you learn to appreciate it more.

I tend to envision the sound of something as a story itself. It has different elements, and a progression. My problem with a lot of pop is that although they are all 'different' in some regard, their sounds all tell the exact same story. There's just nothing pinning their existence down - nothing in it saying that it needs to exist.

Stuff like this grabs me more because it asks itself what stories its sounds tell. The production doesn't even have to be pristine, if it is exploratory enough it can stand out and provide a good experience on those merits. There's some thought put into constructing this mosaic of sounds and emotions that makes it more than the lyrics. You can always tell when the production is taken by the creators as a serious art form versus a means to an end, or a platform for vocals.

Cause every time I try to tell you the words just came out wrong... so I'll have to say I love you in a song...

I'm in a bit of a throwback mood. Someone mentioned Leslie speakers and that got me thinking back to the mid-2000s and drinking with Oh My God at the Record Bar in Kansas City. That was a fun night.

Childhood nostalgia for those who watched Disney's Aladdin.

Another clip showing Jimmy Rosenberg live. Gypsy style fireworks start at 1:42.

    Additional Trivia:
These folks who play in this style, pioneered by Django Reinhardt in 1920s-40s, belong to Romani/Sinti gypsy tribes. They emigrated from Indian subcontinent and settled in parts of Europe. The word 'Sinti' is itself believed to be derived from Sindh/Sindhi, a region in NW Indian subcontinent.
