2009 Animal Collective BBC session. I like these 2 versions, wish the video had "What Would I Want Sky" but I think it got pulled because of the Grateful Dead studio album sample.

Interesting post. It made me wonder why I never followed Julie London's work as I did other jazz singers of approximately the same era (starting with Billie Holiday, moving on to Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughn, on and on). Julie was considered a jazz singer in her prime, though I think of her more as a lounge/ballad specialist.

In my case, it wasn't due to lack of exposure to her singing. One of my uncles was a passionate fan and always had & played her latest records during the mid-to-late '50s and early '60s (her heyday). I suspect Julie London sold a ton or records during her long run, more than many of her contemporaries. She totally crossed over into pop culture, did TV spots, the whole thing.

Just refreshed my memory of her big hits. I suspect the reasons I never kept listening are/were:
    • Her tonally pretty voice was made for ballads, and she based on her career on a succession of them.
    • But as far I can tell, she was less comfortable playing the swinging big band singer, taking on rave-up fast beat tunes of the period that required the singer to keep up with the rhythm section
    • Speaking just of her instrument, Julie's voice didn't really want to scat (Ella); sound like a trumpet (Ella); an oboe d'amore (Sarah Vaughn); or a flute (Anita O'Day)
Still, I really enjoy revisiting her great ballads. The woman could certainly weave a vocal spell...

PS: "Yummy Yummy Yummy" was her very last album

Word. My younger sister turned me onto Curtis ~1970. She also turned me onto Parliament/Funkadelic. Things were never quite the same after that.

I keep listening to Curtis' soundtrack to SUPER FLY, especially "Pusherman," the arrangement of which is pinpoint-perfect. Can't get over how brilliant the whole thing is. He was next-level...

Folkvangr + Utopia’22 (how the f* is the Folkvangr driving AND taming the Utopia with no EQ at the same time???)

Fleetwood Mac fans: This is a good historical addition to the catalog… but don’t expect the spunk of the records and their pristine engineering here. Have fun.
