For anybody who's tired of, "jangly soulless indie," I highly recommend checking out the album Raw Honey by Drugdealer. They are a cool band, made up of mostly east coast guys from Baltimore who have set up shop in LA. It's an interesting album in the sense that they don't really have a "lead singer," as such, and different songs are sung by different members. They've been described as a "collective," which sounds dorky but kind of fits. Raw Honey also has killer cameos from Weyes Blood (Natalie Mering) and Dougie Poole. Their sound is definitely 70s inspired. People often bring up Steely Dan and CSN&Y when they first hear their music. But like Weyes Blood, I think they use this inspiration tastefully and really have their own sound. It's a different branch of the rock family tree from Radiohead/The National, etc., maybe closer stylistically to how rock music started out. I've played this record at least once every day since I learned about it. If you listen to it and like what you're hearing, maybe check out Titanic Rising from Weyes Blood too. Also one of my favorite albums from 2019.

Just listened to Ohms, the new Deftones record, and it's phenomenal. Highly recommend checking it out.

I know Drugdealer, they're cool. I agree, they aren't in the same sub-genre as The National, Arcade Fire, Elow, Radiohead, etc.

I've actually found a number of rock albums, but they're all in various sub-genres, namely psychedelic (I put Drugdealer In that group) which has seen a little movement lately with other bands like Morgan Dealt, The Holy Drug Couple, Jacco Gardner, King Gizzard and the Lizzard Wizzard, 75 Dollar Bill, Horse Lords.

then there's a surf rock movement which is mostly too happy and fast for me, but there's some awesome stuff. Then sludge metal or "stoner rock", a term I despise because it's not how I think of the genre. And I hate how many bands have the word "dope" in their name. Jesus. Take yourselves a little more seriously. But if I like the music, heya. And metal in general which is still going very strong for whatever reason.

I still wish there was more just f'ing rock music. Seems everyone feels the need to make weird shit to get inspired. Not sure why. But art comes in waves and movements, and we may have just seen the end of the indie-rock movement. Now we have to listen to surf rock to get our fix.

Not trying to be a dick but sleep is more stoner metal, I mean they kind of invented it early 90s. Earthless is more jam/classic rock. Crowbar and Eyehategod are what I'd consider sludge. Earthless being more vintage oriented than the other Sleep which just started as sabbath worship. Praise Iommi.

I really don’t see Earthless being put in the classic rock bin but we could argue about stupid genre names forever. And ever
