I have occupational ADD so it is sometimes fun to recount my journey, especially since I don't know if I consider what I am currently working on a straight occupation. After I got an undergraduate degree in Biology and decided against going to medical school, I got a job at a large bank as a financial advisor. That led to a couple of management roles at a small mutual fund company for several years. A personal event caused some rethinking and a reset and led me to go to school full time to get my MBA. I caught the entrepreneurial bug and for a couple years tried unsuccessfully to get a medical technology startup off the ground. Currently, I am a partner in a small design collective that focuses on leveraging the talents of independent designers (mostly architects at this point) to get access to larger jobs that normally wouldn't be available to them. But the big thing I am working on is trying to get a social benefit corporation off the ground that centers around community redevelopment via real estate and education starting in the southside of Chicago. While pursuing my dreams has been transformative and I absolutely am better person for it, I do miss having active income and hope that my dreams can bear fruit sometime in the next year. I don't know if I could ever go back to a normal 9-5.

You forgot the bit about being a reality TV star :)

I'm a rather dull IT geek, specialising these days in enterprise storage arrays and fibre networkzzzzzz. The good part is, I get to work from home full time, allowing me to wear headphones for most of the day .

By education, a metallurgist/aerospace engineer who spent way too much time staring at metal structures on not-quite-but-reasonably-close-to the atomic level (and like Priidik, I'm good to ask about metals and stuff)

    In reality: overeducated hobo

In my other life: principal of a non-profit children's education program, and dance teacher/event organizer

Unemployed biophysicist. Emphasis on nanotechnology. I am super interested in pedagogy and I have a bunch of ideas. Currently obsessed with everything DIY, especially audio but I consider this a detour. It allows me to apply what I've learned over 12 years of physics training which is a huge attraction to me.

I'm a paramedic. It's an interesting occupation. I joined the job as a pretty naive 20 year old and was assigned to our cities red light district, where I have continued to work for the past 15 years. I get to walk into people's lives, often when they least expect it, so it makes for an interesting study in human behaviour. Being able to alleviate pain and distress or helping people in vulnerable situations is a privilege that is never lost on me.

Delivering babies is pretty messy scary awesome too...

That is what we who spent too many years going to college/university learning anything but IT or law fear, really.

A GC coordinator and safety officer. Follow every piece of rules and laws until they get into the way to profit. Babysit every single person then see them cut through their tendon and break their legs.

Awesome. I am a librarian and I used to be an IT technician with just one degree in computer science. Books really are more fun but I agree, the money is not the greatest. Glad you are enjoying your role.

    Cheers.

I operate a variety of truck based oil field equipment, tankers, hydro-vac, vac, water truck, etc. in the grimey oil sands of Northern Canada.

Currently hiding in a restroom typing this, and keeping up to date on the happenings of SBAF.

I work a shift of 22 days at work and 11 days off at home. Minimum 12 hours days, with no days off during the 22, did I mention I feel tired right now, I'm on day 20...

I'm an associate professor at Macquarie Uni in Sydney. I do category theory, which is on the abstract, meta end of pure mathematics, but with direct applications to computer science (eg functional programming) and physics (eg topological quantum field theory). On a day to day basis I do things like teaching undergraduates algebra, though sometimes I get to slip in a sly lecture on dithering and noise shaping. It's quite fun when you get to play them a 1-bit 44khz audio file...

When you are trying to be witty, be careful that you don't only make it half way.

I never learned any French. I hope that that French teacher would be glad that I remembered one thing he used to say.
