Recent bourbon purchase - Orphan Barrel distilling CO buys abandoned warehouses of whiskey and blends them, so they typically have older offerings

A new favorite and a steal at around $40. Smooth, complex and with a very nice kick to it. Could have cost twice as much and I don't think anyone would have argued one bit. Highly recommended.

Right: Whiskey is best. I think that Irish spell it this way, but the Scots call it Whisky.

Memories from my drinking days: don't waste money on the fancy malts, just buy Irish, not Scotch. A common-or-garden Irish whisky, eg Jameson's, is as smooth and flavoursome as a much more expensive Scotch.

I strongly advise, drink tea! But if the idea doesn't appeal, drink Irish!

Either you're drunk, trolling or just not very good at whiskey since a good blend is nothing to sneeze at. I suggest you try to make your next post a bit more informative.

I've tried two different offerings from Nikka and enjoyed them both. I enjoy the floral aspect of their offerings. If I ever see this around here, I'll pick up a bottle.

Which others did you try? I tried the cheaper "Nikka All Malt" but it was nothing special imho. Not bad but run of the mill in its price range if you ask me.

I'd like them in my small bar for the labels alone! Nice artwork.

This may be unjustified, but I would be suspicious of stuff aimed at the Japanese market (is that Japanese on the label? It's been a long time since I worked with Japanese people, not sure any longer). Some of my Japanese colleagues in London were a bit like some audiophiles: the brand image and the price seemed to unduly influence them. they actually liked to spend money in large amounts!

    Apparently it was unjustified

Someone told me that certain whiskeys go well with coffee as in carajillo/Mexican coffee well.

Is that true and if so what do you recommend? Baileys were mentioned in this regard but I am a novice with wiskeys.

Highly unjustified, nikka is a seriously good distillery. Read up a bit on their history and company if you have the time, it's pretty interesting. This an interview with their chief blender:

I've tried Nikka Coffey Grain Whiskey and Taketsura Pure Malt. I enjoyed them at a tasting event and picked up a bottle of Coffey Grain when I found it locally. My palate tends to favor Rye Whiskey if that's any indication of my general taste.

Yes, I have been surprised at how consistent the Hibiki, Hakushu, & Yamazaki have been over the years...very enjoyable. Suntory has owned parts of Scottish distilleries at times (they own Laphroaig right now).

I've also been pleasantly surprised by Amrut, an Indian whisky, They're doing some good things as well.

Japan is doing extremely well in the world whisky market, actually beating the Scots by a fair margin, a Tawanese single malt actually won the 2015 worlds best SM.

Also have you guys seen this resource for exploring Scotch? http://scotchgit.bitbucket.org/
Reminds me of Marv's DAC chart!

Well I guess it's a lot like audio. I started with a bunch of entry level single malts and found I liked sweeter/smoother/complex and lingering drams, after moving to better quality bottles, I then found I really loved Aberlour A'bunadh and started exploring that top right area, Glendronach 12 was another favourite and so I've moved onto some of the better Glendronachs and started exploring other PX finished casks. I recently picked up a PX laphroaig and found myself enjoying a bit more peat and wood than I used to.

Whiskey is about finding stuff you love, I like to try and keep some of the better stuff from all over that map. It's a journey and as you get further in you will find things changing and developing with experience. Another thing to remember is your palate will prefer different things each day, another good excuse to have a healthy collection like @porkfriedpork

Agreed! As luck would have it, I have a lagavulin16, an oban 14, and a coal ila 12 in my cupboard right now :) so much to explore, so little time... the top-right of the graph is largely unknown to me - yet :)
