I really like my Honda Fit. Awesome little car, great mileage. I think @dmckean44 drives one too. Don't have experience with the latest generation though (mine is a '12)
Another happy Mazda 3 owner, 2018 GT. I don't think the fuel efficiency is quite as good as Civic/Corolla Asian grandma cars but it's way more fun to drive.
Best millage car I know is my father's ford focus 1.6 diesel, 50mpg average. My Mazda 3 2.2D does 35. I wouldn't trade my mazda though. Just like cans test drive your options first. Mpg isn't everything.
The Civic and Corolla are both tops in terms of long-term reliability. The Mazda 3 is hands-down the funnest to drive, as well as being solid for reliability.
Yep, I have two kids seats in my Fit. No problem. And, if you need to haul something you'll have a much better shot in the Fit than in your non-hatchback sedan.
My always-advice for people looking for a car who don't care about cars: Toyota, in whatever segment/cost fits your needs/budget. All other brands are second to Toyota in reliability and build quality for the given dollar. A bold statement I know, but there you are.
The main thing I dislike about my Mazda is that the shock absorption's not great. Also, the built-in GPS is a steaming pile of trash and Mazda still hasn't implemented Apple CarPlay or Android Auto.
I got a new Accord Sport 2.0t a couple weeks ago and I'm loving it. It gets a combined 26 mpg. I was coming from a Challenger Scat Pack, so it's quite the improvement!
I'd test drive the new Civic, the Toyota Corolla and the Mazda 3. They're all excellent cars really. The Civic is brand new so could have some new first year problems, then it's a Honda so who knows.
Toyota is excellent but maybe not that exciting, but should be extremely reliable. The Mazdas are excellent and probably the most fun to drive, those would be my personal pick.
I'd go for a manual Mazda 3 myself. It doesn't have that much power but it's a light car so it's fast enough and handles well. Then the rest comes down to what dealers are in your area, offers, insurance etc.
On Toyotas reliability, my 2006 RAV4 was still running great at 171000 miles last month until it got totaled in an accident.
I personally am getting a 2012 Subaru Impreza hatchback to replace it. Need 4wd up here...
2007 Civic here. Great mileage as expected. Low to the ground makes for a bumpy ride and trouble handling poor road conditions. This car suffered when we went from L.A. to Ohio.
Dude, your in SoCal right? Any car that gets you HOV access is a top choice, right? Probably something all electric and hella expensive! Chevy Bolt or wait for the new Tesla model 3 to finally get produced.
I have an online CR subscription, so feel free to hit me up. Can’t really go wrong with the 3 models mentioned. Honda's engines are pretty bullet proof. My step daughter just paid off her Mazda 3 sedan I co-signed for. It’s been very reliable.
I picked up a Hyundai Elanta last year as I couldn’t pass up the price. (15k new ) CR gives it above average reliability, 10/100k warranty and I get close to 40 mpg on the highway.
I drive 75-125 miles a day and it’s been great.
@Lenroot77 Hyundai have come a really long way. They used to be shit cars 15-20 years ago but today I think they're the equivalent of the more establish Asian brands in terms of quality. Give it another 10-15 years and I'm sure the brand image will catch up too. At the moment they are definitely great cars and great value for money.
