If you're set on the stock russian tubes provided maybe, if you're looking for something similar to solid state like me, not really, makes a difference with the shipping too plus customs.

What I should have clarified is from what I've heard the russian tubes paired make it a bad choice. If you can interchange the tubes than great, if not there is not too much value in this version. Of course no one just base their decision on one post like mine. There's a reason why the other Freya options cost more, just my 2 cents.

I think the first thing a lot of owners do is swap tubes. That said, I expect the stock tubes to not be horrible, I'm sure they chose them as the standard equipment with some deference to quality as well as cost.

I haven’t used tubes in mine in months. It has a Gungnir MB sitting on top, tubes are in their box. I don’t need the tube gain, and I have a nice tube hybrid amp. I paid quite a bit more than $380 for it used, and was satisfied with the deal. Even with the second set of OK tubes I got, this is a better deal. Oh, and passive or solid state for my use......

You underestimate the knowledge, researching capabilities, and direct experience of people on SBAF.

There are no versions or options of Freya. The provided tubes aren't glued to the sockets. There is only Freya - that happens to take any 6SN7 type. Anyone with a half-a-brain considers the two tube packages offered by Schiit either the freebie or the cheapie to get one started.

Secondhand information needs to be qualified. If you "heard" from people, then state who these people are and what associated gear they are using. The Russian tubes aren't exactly my favorite, but they can synergize well depending upon other components and personal preference. Same with the new production Tung Sol package at $100 more. I can argue that the Tung Sol is a worse deal because x4 vintage 6SN7s, easily obtainable for less than $100, are going to sound a lot better.

Interesting, I did not know you could run it without tubes. I tried out a Saga, but found some (but not all) of my recordings needed some gain, which is why I wanted a Freya. It is good to know this is an option to save on tube life (was considering a set of LISSTs as well). Does it sound much like the Saga when running it in passive mode?

Upgrading from my Modi Multibit to a Gungnir Multibit is going to be my next audio purchase, then it will be time to shift my discretionary toy funding to other hobbies for a while - probably building a new VR gaming PC will be next on the list.

If you prefer the passive or FET modes, best to take the tubes out.

You can run it without the tubes in passive or JFET mode, but not in tube mode (as obvious as that may sound) which means you won’t get any more gain than Saga since only the tube mode adds the extra gain. To get the gain without the tubes you’ll need the LISSTs.

Saga and Freya sound quite similar in passive mode, but I’ve only recently gone back to Saga (from Freya) in my 2-channel rig because I found it sounded a bit better. A little more transparent, a little more dynamic. And this was from Gungnir Multibit balanced out into Freya vs. SE out into Saga (obviously, since that’s all it takes) - balanced isn’t everything.

Edit: just re-read your post (and saw Purr1ns too). Maybe you’re talking about only putting the tubes in when you need the extra gain. Sure yep you can do that, but maybe bit of a pain. FYI, you can also run Saga in passive mode without the tube in (but no gain with that preamp regardless).

Thanks, that is good to know. I expect to have some questions regarding balanced connections in the future as well, but don't want to get too ahead of myself.......
