I have a weird fascination with VLIW/EPIC machines, and Itanium was one of the only attempts to bring it to the mass market, it obviously failed miserably compared to AMD's x86-64 ISA. There was lots of cool tech in Itanium though :/
that's an interesting question. I think they both excel at different things, and with both of them having dramatically improved micro-architectures coming this year I'll just punt. AMD is seemingly fixing their single core performance deficit, and intel is further pushing single core performance while also improving scalability along the lines of AMD. It ought to be an interesting year
Yeah ofcourse we will see what happens. It's good to see some competition from AMD again though. Intel is in a bit of trouble with 10nm i wouldn't be suprised if it ends up being 2020 before they get 10nm going.
I am eyeing 2700X & 2600X for the insane value. Ryzen has really added some flavour to the mix. My i5 3570K has been running for 7 years at 4.20-4.50 GHz so can't complain. Going to go with Ryzen next.
