Well I'm not sure how a Stock D7 compares to a modded D5k, but what I noticed was the TH X00 [with Alpha Pads and a complete recable (DHC Nucleotide V3 OCC Copper)] there's a nice crisp quality to the treble, thought the upper mids come forward with the Alpha Pads

So while High Hats aren't excessively bright, there is an added bit of attack an energy on things like snare drums and the higher notes on a Guitar [Listening to Metallica's The Shortest Straw... it's a really BRIGHT song atm] though personally I like that, additionally compare to my LA D5k, the TH X00 has... a better psudeo sound stage, the mids stay rather forward compare to the bass/highs, which presents a nice layering in Metal/rock/edm, but can be... annoying with classical and jazz, an the bass isn't as taut as my LA D5k, but again I've not heard the stock D7k to know how it will compare...

still, I paid around... $170 for the Recable and the ePads, which puts my total cost of the TH X00 at around $570 [which is what I paid for my LA D5k without OUT Lawton Pads] and if given the choice of the two... I think the TH X00 is the better buy, though with the Lawton pads [which sound horrendous on the TH X00] the LA D5k is the better headphone, though it's rather picky so while it's more transparent I've found it's too dry for Metal/Rock/Edm on my Solid State so I bought a tube [Pro Starlight, running a GE 6SN7 tube hoping a ECC 31 Mullard will take it even further] to get some of the bloom back into the mids for rock and metal,

my point is, get teh TH X00 it's fantastic!

I'm weak............. tried to find all good reasons not to buy these... still hoped that destiny will make it impossible to buy it.... but when I saw the drop nearing 900.... I finallly gave up! arfffff

But this a great opportunity to be able to check/compare my taste with SBAF member's taste! Might either make me a minion or take me on the road of mutiny on the bounty.... haha

The HP50 has less bass and much less treble, is warmer or laid back in signature. Much more portable than the thx00 however

I'm tempted, but the wait will kill me. I'd also like balanced cables so I can use it with Ragnarok at home or better isolation to use it at work.

It ticks a few boxes, but not enough to justify the wait.

I have joined as well... So bored of Oppo PM-2's boring sound, selling them... I can wait a few months because I bought the amazing Ultrasone Edition M yesterday.

Yea, everyone's super pleased. We're going to make a lot of these. On a long enough time scale, everyone that wants one will get one, but you won't be able to casually log in to Massdrop and buy one for a while.

I did that mod to my Shure 440 a few years back, and it helped, although it's still got some rough treble. I'm not sure why it never occurred to me to do that with my D7000!

I guess depending on the day, I'm quite happy with the D7000's performance. I'm just curious about the X00, and if it can improve on an already great headphone, seems like a great buy at $400!

Thanks man! As I have the HP50... from what you describe it looks like I'll dig into the sound signature of the TH-X00!
Now the wait.......... 4 months left to get them.... come on @Will do something! haha just kidding!

Massdrop has re-opened the second drop for the TH-X00 headphones. It had been limited to a thousand units, but Will contacted Fostex and had it doubled. Anyone that thought they missed out this time around has a second chance!

Has anyone else found the clamping force is insufficient? If I move my head they slide around and I have a pretty big head. It feels like the headband will snap if I try to bend it for a tighter fit.

There's a user on HF that makes add-on headstraps that can be used to pinch the two arms together, I reached out to him to buy one from him. I'll let you know how it goes in a couple weeks. Example: http://i.imgur.com/9ls2s5u.jpg

Didn't anyone mention the headband is made out of metal ? I mean judging by their weight, one would expect high grade framework.

Your head must not be that big if you have those concerns. ;)

The headband is robust. I've bent it before both ways. Just be sure to extend the cups out so you don't screw up the metal pegs that secure the gimbal into the headband.

You questioning the size of my head?! Heh.

I wonder if the previous owner just stretched them out.
