This is momentous! My first dog, Petie, learned at a fairly early age that 7pm was the music hour, and we became music buddies almost every evening. I guess you could say he was my first super best audio friend, long before this forum ever existed! My last dog, Tucker, well, she was never quite so keen on sharing the music hour with me. However, tonight Mr. Johnny Cakes decided to take the tumble down the audiophile rabbit hole. Finally I have someone to compare notes w/ on the differences between LIM and A2, and whether Music For Animals is indeed for all animals.

I’m a mountaineer at heart, but my German Shepard/ Husky is a pure bred beach pupper.

During this challenging time for my wife and myself we have been very fortunate to have these furry companions who took turns sleeping in our laps while we obtained much needed rests in short but frequent bursts.

We’re the proud parents of a lovely, cuddly, and fun kitten!

On Thursday night, around 8 pm, my wife was teaching an online adult education class at home (on the Roman Empire). She could hear a cat outside, calling out in apparent distress. She couldn’t exactly end class right away so sent texts asking me to investigate. Under our neighbor’s house I saw a little orange tabby kitten. While skittish and clearly freaked out, he came out to say hello, darted back, and approached again me cautiously. After a while of this, my wife came out with water and food, and the little guy chowed down voraciously. He was clearly starving.

He let us give him little pets and eventually we were able to coax him into a carrier with food. As we’ve already got two cats, one of which has an auto immune disease, we set up the newcomer in the basement, well away from them, for the night with lots of food and water, a litter box, and some beds. First thing the next morning went down to see him and he immediately came over to us. Within a few seconds he was rolling over on to his back for tummy rubs, all the while purring like mad, in between freaking out, dashing away, calming down again, and coming back over for more cuddles.

We managed to get him an early appointment that morning: no microchip, a clean bill of health, and he’d been neutered. Given this and his friendliness, he’d clearly met people before. Everyone at the vet’s loved him. He got his vaccinations and some meds. And since he’s safe to have in the house with our other cats – albeit in quarantine for a week – we decided to adopt him. We couldn’t very well give him up to a shelter. And we had a space at home for him: our elderly tuxedo cat, which we adopted a couple of years ago after his owner went into a care home, sadly passed away in February. (I’ll post about her later). We’d told ourselves that we’d wait a while before getting another cat. But then this little guy showed up as if he knew there was a vacancy!

We’ve named him Cali. The specific subject of my wife’s class Thursday night was Caligula, and we joked that if the kitten was a boy, it’d be funny if we named the little guy after him. It turns out he is indeed a boy, and while “Caligula” seemed a bit on the nose, we went with Cali instead - or Cal for short. (My wife’s a Cali girl, originally, too).

He’s settling in wonderfully. He eats like a horse, farts like a hippo, poos like an elephant (he figured out the litter box right away!), purrs like a champ, and is utterly adorable. He’s about 5 months old and has a hilarious uncoordinated awkwardness about him. He must have had a traumatic time outside, though, the poor thing, as he’s easily startled, especially by loud noises. His fur is in good shape, though, and while hungry, he wasn’t overly thin or malnourished. He’s now coming out of his shell with lots of cuddles. He started playing last night, and tonight is leaping around chasing a feather wand.

We couldn’t be happier to have him. Now to see how the others get along with him next week…
