On a more serious note though, I'm definitely more excited to see Rowling's spinoff, Fantastical Beasts.

Please tell me people on this board like Harry Potter.

We are on the Howgarts express here and looking forward for the new movie. There is also a new book coming out (even after Rowling said no more) "Harry Potter and the Cursed Child". Looking forward for it in hopes it does not suck.

The Fantastical Beast... book was pretty much a disappointment though. Seemed sort of like charity work or something. My son still read it (along with all of the series)

Woah, this is one of those rare thread in SBAF where the title had nothing to do with the conversation yet it is still up and alive!
Now where's that rare pepe meme when you need one...

To continue with the derailment direction: Gosh I loved those Hellboy movies. That Elf-like villain is a really cool character.

The only thing I didn't like about BvS is Affleck. Besides the storyline. The young Spidey in Captain America Civil War is cool IMO. He was quite funny whilst fighting Buckey and Falcon. I can't stop laughing!

I was looking forward to a comic thread, but not this sort of comic thread.

Damn, there was some good fighting going on this thread, now it's all about movies. I don't watch movies.

In my youth, as in single digits age, I used to love BBC radio drama. I preferred it to television because "the pictures were better." How it is that I never got into cinema-going, I don't know, but I didn't.

There was a period of movies that I watched on the TV. If I had to contribute a movie reference to this thread, maybe it might be...

    Hey Ken,

Thanks for your reply and apologies for my late follow-up (been away for a few days).

I’m still trying to wrap my head around the Vega’s sonics — read: so far all impressions seem really very subjective and, dare I say, often, in my eyes, merely regurgitating what others (Jude and yourself mostly) have said. I, personally, would very, very much appreciate it if you could post a FR graph of the Vega and Dorado (like you did for the Andromedas), all the more when you say the Andromeda and Vega are “totally different”.

Unfortunately, living in Europe makes it practically impossible for me (and many others) to try this phone before purchasing it, and the current Euro/GBP exchange rate against the USD makes it even more difficult to take a leap of faith of this magnitude. It’d be great if there was a European tour of these new phones (or Vega & Dorado at least). It’s be great of someone like james444 (in Austria), who occasionally posts on this site (and is a HF “Contributor”) could try these phones and pass them around to a select trusted few people (in Europe) and have them post their impressions here — james444 is one of the very few individuals I know who tells it like it is.

    Random thoughts.

It’s very nice to have Ken Ball posting in this thread, it really is — I can’t help, but feel, however, that some of the things some of us have come to appreciate about this site (and the old CS site) may be currently somewhat compromised, not so much due to his presence here per se, but mostly by how some have responded to such presence. I hope some of the people, whose views I respect, still have what it takes to give their truly honest impressions.

It seems now DDs are it! WOW!! Hilarious stuff reading some of the posts and claims made by some (both here and on HF). So, suddenly everyone is a massive DD fan and BAs (kinda) suck. The words regurgitation and parroting spring to mind lately much more often than ever before on this site (or CS). I’m absolutely convinced that some of the people who now praise DDs so much—or lecture about DDs—could not tell the difference between a DD from a BA driver in a blind test.

Some people are saying the Vegas are a steal — well, they are a steal if you take the likes of JHA, Da Wiz (Heir Audio) & Tralucent as examples/a benchmark. In my not so humble opinion, these CA phones are not cheap (and most definitely NOT a steal). Perhaps they are expensive, but still reasonably priced considering what’s on offer out there, manufacturing costs, R&D and, and, AND CUSTOMER SERVICE.

Am I the only one who’s lately feeling SBAF, or at least this thread, isn’t all that different to a lot of the stuff we see on HF?

Maybe it has something to do with useless posts like this. Ken already addressed the request for a FR graph. Marv is already in the process of securing a Vega for measurements. Just because something is expensive doesn't make it a poor value.

You're blogging about how an IEM that was just announced less than a week ago has nothing but "subjective impressions". No one clicked on this thread to read your LiveJournal.

    Ummm... what?

I think the problem here is simply your cynicism and expectancy bias.

Last I checked, people don't blind test IEM drivers.

You have never listened to the Vegas, then go on some crusade about how people are merely speculating, then speculate yourself that it probably isn't that good value... and then oh wait it's actually good value.

"blogging'? "[My] LiveJournal"? Did I say the Vega was "poor value"? Oh dear, dear...

Yes, I'm aware Mr Ken Ball has indeed already addressed the FR graph thingy (and I know he's just been back from Japan), but as of now, there's not been one posted, though he's certainly taken the time to reply to more posts here and on HF (note this is not a criticism). Perhaps the sparrow was simply trying to push the FR thingy issue a little, Mr k4star. Or, put another way, trying to remind Mr Ball that it'd be MUCH appreciated if said graph was posted rather soon.

That's a cheap way to discredit an opinion. We could also discredit positive impressions as optimism and new toy/I just spent a lot of money bias. Neither attribution is particularly useful for quality discourse. Personally why I come here more and more and the other site less and less is because skepticism is not only tolerated but embraced.

I don't think you get my point. I don't think there's anything wrong with being cynicism and expectancy bias. I think it's perfectly natural.

Using it as an indictment of someone else's calibrated and measured opinions is wrong. You don't go around throwing your skepticism whenever your spidey senses tingle. Of course, feel free to object or critique once you have had more information/experience yourself.

In this case, virtually no value was added to the content on SBAF.

    Mr Dr. Higgs,

Be brave and please give us some out-of-the-box impressions. No, this is not a desperate sparrow asking here, but someone who actually also values very first initial impressions, and someone who is rather sceptical of miraculous/significant sonic changes after burn-in — I am, however, well aware of other variables that often make people believe burn in is a reality.

I also happen to own the Andromeda and UERM.

I agree it’s not that surprising the number of people who’ve ordered and got a set of Vegas already — perhaps it is a bit more surprising, or telling, actually, there’s hardly any talk of the Dorados (the hybrid ones). Seems it’s always the more expensive phone the one people will go for (that’s the one Jude reviewed, BTW).

If I’m visiting this thread, it is precisely because, like you and others, I’ve been VERY impressed by a CA product (the Andromeda). And then, like you and some others, I also regard very highly several DD phones (PF IX, EX1000, EX800, HD650 & HD800, to name a few).

I’ll admit the release of these new CA models caught me by surprise, their release date, that is, so soon after the Andros & Nova—barely 6 moths apart—but I did take note of who was releasing these new phones (read: a company I’ve come to appreciate & respect) and the different tech involved.

I’ve not heard the Focal Utopia, so can’t comment on those, but I have said I do prefer the Andromedas to my HD800s, and the Andro’s treble being the very best I’ve heard (knowing very well just how difficult it is to get good treble timbre and performance).

As for the “earned early hype”, I can understand it, I just wish some of the posts were more, er, useful, SBAF-like, for lack of better terms. As noted already, I still have no idea, really, what these phones sound like, and in that sense this feels more like being on HF. Sorry, but I can’t help feeling some of the stuff I’ve been reading here is very HF-like, i.e. hype along with some of the mandatory audio jargon for good measure to, er, sound, er, well, you catch my drift…

As an aside, the number of dislikes I’ve received (10 so far) on my last few posts is very HF-like and quite telling (3-4 of them utterly expected from usual sparrow haters, and others pretty reactive in good old HF fashion) — 2-3 dislikes, perhaps, would have been more appropriate for SBAF/CS, in my view.

    ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
    ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Okay now, concerns re: the Vegas:

Treble, treble, TREBLE. It’s taken me years to finally hear such high quality rendering of upper registers — the treble I get from the Andros is as close to ideal as I’ve heard in real life. I don’t think people have been able to mederately accurately compare the Vega’s with the Andro’s treble.

Add to that a wonderfully resolving midrange (on the Andros) — what’s it like on the Vegas? Does the bass really NOT bleed into the midrange? Bass happy/heavy along with elevated mids??? WTF?

So, are the Vegas bass cannons or not? Semi bass cannons? The truth is that any bass-heavy phone is actually very appealing initially… Bass you can feel coming from an IEM?? This is physically impossible and it actually points to a veeeery bass-happy phone. The Andro’s bass reaches quite low already, and on good masters it’s just about right! Any more (amplitude) and, in my view, it would sound wrong, bloated, muddy and possibly making the signature fairly warm/off!

What sort of music, albums, masters are people listening to with these new phones? And compared DIRECTLY (not from memory) to what?

Some claim that note weight is thicker on the Vegas than on the Andros — this would make the former overly thick and warm, IMO. One of the strengths of the Andros is their very realistic note weight, which, in my view, is one of several aspects that makes the Andros sound better than the HD800s.

Then several people claim soundstage is kinda closed-in, but one person says it’s quite big (and he's tried all the CA lineup)…

Perhaps the reason you're getting so many dislikes is that you're being a condescending prick and people are reacting to it. You're telling a lot of people how their posts are coming off and seem to be utterly blind (or uncaring) as to how yours are. This is made even more hilarious by the fact that you have not heard the Vegas and so really have no leg to stand on in telling others about them.

While you're so worried about how HF-like this thread is, you don't seem to notice that you're being an armchair expert, also a stalwart of HF. The fact that you refer to yourself in third person and as "the sparrow", combined with your comment about having "haters", tells me you're a pretentious, conceited blowhard.

My apologies for derailing the thread. This guy just pushed my buttons. I won't respond to him further.
