get a third party DSL modem and not "rent" their overpriced equipment. Cable modems galore at Best Buy, Staples, etc. but no VDSL modems - anyone have a source? I guess the market has changed in the last few years...
Century Link ought to have a list somewhere of 3rd party modems that exist. A search on Amazon brings up some options, but I don't know anything about the service you set up.
I bought mine on ebay. CenturyLink (now Lumen I think) sells their modems direct to customers (but $$), and there is a pretty decent second-hand market. But yes, I agree that it would nice to be able to just buy a new one on Amazon (or what have you).
I think it may be because ADSL is so slow that there's not really a market for it any more. Cable is so much faster at a reasonable price for most people.
Of course there are outliers, and people that can't get cable internet. Soon Starlink may be a solution, but not today.
Fios is still an option but not everywhere. The home 5G wireless that Verizon has touted but not yet really rolled out. Not sure where Google Fiber is these days.
Thanks guys, I ended up purchasing one used via Amazon. We will see if it works. My inlaws don't even need the $50 a month 25mbps from VDSL, let alone cable/fios speed (which are all more expensive in our area) ;)
I picked which apartment complex to move into based on which ones had Google Fiber, this was an amazing decision. Google Fiber is hands down the best ISP I've ever had, its not even close.
