When I was working in publishing pictures...

There is always someone who will say that some colour or other is wrong. And, unless the difference is fairly extreme, it was usually bullshit: if you are not looking at the original, in the same light, no, your comments are useless! ...

There is a lot of similar bullshit in hifi.

But... if our auditory memory was really that bad, how would we remember the difference between instruments! From knowing a flute from a violin to knowing two speakers apart is a matter of degree. Where do they draw this 20-second line?

In listening tests, I think that the bigger failure is that, when we listen to the same thing several times, our brains find different stuff in it. That extra detail we hear may not be because of different component, but because of our aural/brain mechanism.

Isn’t it something like 20 seconds that you can subconsciously hold it in short term memory unless you consciously make an effort to extend it (i.e. repeating a number in your head) or file it in longer term memory? (Simplified for 140 chars)

It seems to be, yes. What amuses me is that there is never mentioned long term auditory memory when comparing gear. How long does it last?

I think what it sounds like matters less than what it FEELS like.
An unforgettable audio experience can last much longer than 20s.
