First step: Why spend more money?

@YMO I’m using an ifi Zen DAC which has been good but I never intended it to be my final DAC.

My friend has Vali 2 and last weekend heard my MJ3+Yggdrasil A2 and was blown away. He's stuck because everything he's built is single ended and Yggdrasil A2 is best out of BAL. And using Yggdrasil with Vali 2 is well, weird. I am trying to sell him on Big Pee Pee and ESS card but without a listen he won't buy anything.

@roshambo123 I’m seriously considering a used Yggdrasil A2. I’m getting a Rag 1 to do double duty for headphones and speakers.

BigPeePee is good middle ground wheee you can more music with the difference.

@roshambo123 Your friend could get a LIM or MIB, which are about as good out of the SE outs.

I really enjoy my Modius E regardless of price, though when paired with the Rag 1.5, any harshness in the headphones will be laid bare.

@E_Schaaf Not the Modius but I’ve considered the Gungnir D/S.

If that's the case then you probably know there's a new gungnir delta sigma dac in the works using "singularity" might want to wait.

@Merrick LIM is a good suggestion but I have no way of letting him try it unless the Schiitr has it. I haven't heard MIB, so I don't know if it's his sound or not. He tends to be treble sensitive, dark tilt preference, which LIM is.

Also, he's heard Beefroast 2/64 and I don't think he was very taken, so I don't know if he really would like LIM, and it's not really my jam either.

Everyone’s description of Barfcoast 2/64 makes it sound pretty significantly different from LIM, but I haven’t heard one. Weird given the chips used but just goes to show you implementation matters.

I haven't heard either so can't comment, but at this point, I'm not sure what direction he wants to go. Likely none, given there's not an obvious way forward without a big expenditure or uncertainty. If I had fuckUmoney I'd just buy him Big Pee Pee with the 9028 and say send it back to me if you don't like

If you friends needs a RU6 I could give up mine for a solid price.

@roshambo123 Did I miss what DAC he’s using now? Modi MB 1 seems like the obvious candidate here.

I know, it's my original Schiit stack he bought off me :) He probably won't upgrade. He has more important expenses.

I use an iFi Zen dac in my desktop rig. It is very good at its and above price point. Not sure of your other stuff, objective, price range, etc. but there are not many options that really smoke it until you get into the $600 and above range, application dependent. Lots of well known up to $400 dacs succumb to the Zen.

@bixby I agree it’s a good DAC and can hold up well to competition. My budget for this is $800 and up, an arena where I think I’d see notable improvements. But I don’t want to churn a bunch so I’m being careful about what I’m considering. This would get paired with a Ragnarok 1 for headphones and speakers.
