Hard to tell who is more morally dysfunctional, him or his parents.

Oh shit, Sam Bankman Fraud got 25 years. Pretty standard for Club Fed to reduce time for good behavior. Knock 7 years off of that. Still a long time.

Or maybe not: “There is a risk that this man will be in a position to do something very bad in the future,” Kaplan said. “And it’s not a trivial risk at all.” -Judge Kaplan

The distinction between white collar crime and violent crime is depressing. If he gets out in 18.5 years, he will statistically have more than half his life left, despite stealing ~8 billion dollars and causing untold harm to dozens, if not hundreds, of victims.

The judge was explicit in describing him as not understanding what he did was immoral, this he might very well repeat. Given Madoff, I'm perlexed why he did not maximize sentence.

His parents failed to give him a chance so in that sense I understand some mercy... don't know if that was a factor in the decision.

With good behavior, he would still serve a minimum of 21 years - the 85% rule for Federal sentencing. But he's not barred from any similar type of activity once he's out which is a shame.
