I happened upon this interesting conservation/archiving technique of imaging groove-laden audio mediums like vinyl, glass-base 78rpm discs, cylinders and what have you, it was worth the read and may be for you too:

    An example of recent usage:

Though I am sharing (because it's cool and informative), please don't contact these people to "conserve" your collection of Pitbull and Beiber records...not what this is about. It's about preserving things of relative historical importance – though I think we should probably preserve Beiber so history does not repeat itself? Or at least use his picture on Planned Parenthood marketing material? Hmm.

Fascinating stuff. Conservation is pretty amazing. Can't wait for the thread on which sounds better: vinyl, IRENE scanned and reconstructed vinyl, or native digital ;-)

Off-topic but related: I had a wood inlay end-table restored a couple years ago by a professional conservator. He cleaned the surfaces and reconstructed damaged and missing inlay by scoring and hand painting a resin to look like the original wood patterns. Meticulous work. I was amazed. Here's a before and after:

How long did that restoration take?
(did it cost as much as a car to do?)

It took 4 months, but there were stops and starts. Cost about as much as a shitty used car ;-)

If you are near New Jersey and need wood furniture restored, *highly* recommended:
