    1. The heatsinks on the amp board don't even get that hot. Why would we need bigger heatsinks? Real power and bandwidth figures are the website. We actually hook up an HD600 and LCD2 and crank the thing up until we see clipping on the scope. We aren't hiding how powerful or not powerful the amp is.
    2. You guys know the history of the BW going from two chassis to one. We even conducted a vote here. (The unit stacking on top on the Gungnir Multibit was not accidental). A single board would have been a much more elegant solution. But it would have taken us more time (money) to redesign two existing boards. Looking back, yes, the board could have been better planned out without the need for as much hand soldering wires and shit.
    3. @Rotijon: We can't compete against Audio-GD. US assembly and labor isn't cheap. A lot of what we didn't do as opposed to what we could do for the amp was to keep costs down. Take a look at all of the parts on the BW. (And there are a lot of parts). Add them up and price them on Mouser. Also take a look at the stupid shit we did like keeping the components close together, having resistors mounted vertically, etc. The board was expensive to stuff and difficult to troubleshoot / rework. Where we didn't skimp was sound quality.
    4. Putting a KSA headamp together from EBay is a good idea. After chassis, connectors, and jacks, can probably put one together for $600-$700, maybe less if you are DIY'er with parts (wires, screws, standoffs, jacks, caps, resistors, etc.) lying around. I don't recommend going against for it if you can do it. EC sells to people who don't wish to DIY, whether it's because they can't or it's because they don't have time. Last time I checked, Craig needs to make payments on car, mortgage, food, and take care of his daughter. This is how capitalism works. And in any event, a KG KSA sounds different from an EC BW.
    5. For people who think KG is an infallable God who knows everything from looking at the internals, he is completely wrong on the Studio being a push pull amp based on his looking at the number of wires attached to the OPT. It's kind of a trick OPT that only people here on the site know the details about.

I can confirm that the BW doesn't need bigger heatsinks; mine gets warm to the touch, but never hot.

I'm also happy to report that the version 1 red-and-black color scheme is not completely gone. When I look inside the ventilation slots on top of the amp, I see a row of small, blood-red lights shining brightly in the belly of the beast.

P.S. Just in case people think we are charging too much and getting rich, buying ourselves Aventadors, Veyrons, and shit:
    1. The chassis costs us $100 including painting, laser etching, etc. (but not including the time and gas money we use to drive to three different places in the San Pornando Valley to get the work done.)
    2. The two boards cost us $500 to be made locally in Southern California. About $250 each. This includes parts, stuffing, and "testing". We've had to do a lot of rework ourselves. The board house was terrible. They pulled off crap like forgetting to put parts on.
    3. Labor for final assembly is $100. Costs for box and custom cut foam for shipping are not included in this.
This amp costs us $700 to make, not including ancillary costs. It sells for $1289. Anyone who has been in this business knows that this is not profitable. Something to think about for pretend businessmen or communists who think that everything should be for free.

Not sure if you are being sarcastic on the raw fish bit or not. But if you weren't, that's one of the most american things an american tourist can say. Ahahaha :D Different strokes for different folks. I agree with you on the sloppy and unrefined, i consider audio-gd a budget solution to a high end sound. Its like buying wagyu beef and abalone at Isetan (A local mall with great cheap food). Great ingredients, delicious stuff, reasonable price, shitty everything else.

I'm going to agree with you, i dont expect US products to be able to compete with china stuff in terms of cost effectiveness. A megatron from a good builder in china cost 1.8k, while a unit built in the US or Canada will set you back 4-5k. I dont expect the food in "The Fat Duck" be able to compete with the price/quality ratio of my favorite fried rice place. But i know for a fact that the experience given to me at "The Fat Duck" will be worth far more.

You and craig have definitely proved your audiophile and honesty cred. That is beyond doubt. Your care and effort towards this forum is something few can match. I think a few small and high impact things EC can really do to improve things is to make it very neat and professional internally. It just requires more time planning the boards out and really check it out on CAD. And make sure to put pictures of the board and internals in plain sight on the website (ala Schiit). I think one of the benchmark of a good audio company is the willingness to show the internals in full view. It was the Studio internal pic pictures that had me start taking EC products seriously despite much brainwashing by Head-Case. The internals is where you show you really know your shit.

And yes, the BW sounded pretty darn good.

I know craig has his commitments and maybe this is only his side gig. People are free to charge whatever they want. However, i dont think having your living cost dictate a big part of your price is a good idea, especially when an amp handmade by Dennis Had cost 1.5k. I can definitely see a gap in the sub 1k and high 1k department. I'm pretty sure a tube amp there will really increase demand and translate to lower cost.

Last bit, i cant discuss kevin's technical points, but it is probably time EC defends its circuit designs. I think that's the mark of a real audiophile company. As much as i dislike chord stuff, Rob Watts standing up to his products definitely make me want to reconsider my position every now and then. Im actually even considering buying a DAVE. But i just cant, because its a small box with a PCB smaller a mac-book motherboard. Jesus. But god, it sounds good enough to make people sell off totaldac monoblocks apparently.

What technical points are there to defend against when people make up random stuff like "needs bigger heatsinks" when the heatsinks are warm to the touch and you can leave your finger on them? Or when people misidentify a SE amp as push-pull because they come to wrong conclusions based on looking at the internals? KG is really scraping from the bottom of the barrel on this one.

And seriously, why should I even waste my time to respond to someone and a forum (HC) who seems to be overtly hostile against the smaller boutique manufacturers: Craig, Alex, Donald, etc. You have to wonder about peoples' motivations.

Maybe I shouldn't have brought up Craig's living expenses, but I was trying to make a point EC is Craig's only source of income. I don't know where the f**k you are getting the idea that EC is side-gig idea for Craig or that these amps are being priced based on Craig's living expenses.

Let me put it more bluntly. The BW is not currently profitable and may never be. EC is losing money on every single amp sold for this run. I asked Craig to price the amp at $1499, but he didn't want to because he is stubborn, wants to make good sounding shit for cheap, and didn't expect that manufacturing difficulties would happen. I've already refused my commission.

Finally, please stop drinking the Kool-Aid. Please give us a f'ing break.

Because those comments come from a respected amp designer and forum that many if not all of your customers are aware of. If its untrue or wrong, it needs to be corrected, lest it becomes a dent at EC's reputation. Both of which will bring down the reputation of EC and take away customers. I know i wouldn't have ever considered EC stuff back in those days, especially since i usually buy blind.

There's a reason why RSA and Cavalli gear are irrelevant or close to it. A crimson which people here consider to be really good has been on sale at the other side for 2 months with no takers, despite being relatively low priced. A lau or LL2 is going for less than half and still cannot be sold. Right now, EC will have a steady current of customers from this forum, the quality and wait times also keep the value up (same for DNA). However, its still not something you should let stand.

I remember reading a post from a long time back on head-case when it was just formed, and a few members implied that jude begged to get in. Damn, did jude quiet things down quickly when he showed up and offered to defend himself with the recorded emails.

Apex makes less or about the same amount of amps with EC. 10k an amp and no complaints from the other side. Todd and Pete are also not members of headcase, not much bias there. ECP and Headamp are all friends with them, but i dont think its going to stop anyone if its built badly.

All product design is an exercise in balancing priorities. For BW, board aesthetics/layout was obviously a lower priority for EC than sound quality, price, reliability, time-to-market, etc. Their priorities for the product line up nicely with what I care about, so BW was an easy decision, and I'm really happy with the results.

For you @Rotijon , it seems like board and circuit details are much higher up on your priority list, but I can't say those things have any effect on the experience of the product for me. I'm one of those nerds that would rework the dress plate typography waaay before the board layout.

And as far as pricing goes, based on the products that BW competes with favorably, I have no problems with the price.

Let's say I have a lot of those too, but I don't feel the need to use such tactics.

What I don't understand why you continue to be seemingly unsatisfied by my responses: 1) That we didn't do a single board for this run because of time-to-market and controlling fixed costs; 2) That we didn't need bigger heatsinks because they didn't get hot; 3) That KG is just guessing at this point (and has already guessed wrong); 4) That EC does not necessarily place a priority on cosmetics or design elegance.

This only tells me that it's lose-lose situation to even bother to respond. My point is that EC can't keep responding to BS. And BTW, not that many people care all that much about what KG / HC has to say. They've already poisoned themselves with the LL fiasco. They diminished not only Cavalli Audio, but also themselves by the way that they did it. I even remember comments (now deleted) back to Alex when he responded there like "f**k You Thought Leader". I'm going to take the advice I gave to Alex back then and simply not respond to BS. I'm now sorry that I did and that it's even gone this far.

Imagine if there were distributors, retailers, salesmen and the such looking for a cut. BW is a $2500 amp, easy. Long live the small american company who still produces a superior product.

For $2500, we'd put it in a much nicer chassis. :D Anodized in your choice of colors.

yeah i was going to say, didn't cavalli attempt to clarify things only to have it blow up even further? one thing worth noting is that if people have prior beliefs (even if they are wrong), it's awful hard for others to change them. people are surprisingly and irrationally reluctant to modify or change their beliefs in light of new or contradictory information. in this case especially, since the group in question has a track record for this sort of thing.

Cavalli Audio seems to be doing quite well. They've sold hundreds and hundreds of Liquid Carbons. It's also my understanding that the LF was also super successful with well over a hundred or maybe two hundred units sold. I think Cavalli Audio hurt itself more than HC ever did when they attempted a distribution model (remember when the LAu was priced at $6k), and ended up lowering prices when they transitioned back to the direct sale model.

BW update. Delivery of another 10 units late next week. We are behind and haven't delivered in the past week or this week.

Whining about heatsinks? The Black Widow is cooler than the Asgard 2 and both of them sound better than the GS-X mk2! KG complaining about the paint and heatsinks on amps that run cool is like Creed bitching that the Beatles, Led Zeppelin, and Mozart were all lame as they didn't lift weights.

too each his own but the big sound get together done by inner fidelity almost all agreed that the black widow was amazing for the price and even topping way higher end amps so it all comes down to the sound and black widow knocks it out the park if what i have heard is remotely accurate.
