Regarding bass distortion, yes, it is worse, but also similar to what the HD650 measures with. Interesting talking point, and absolutely worth investigating, but I'm not sure I'd worry too much (just talking about me personally). Others will likely care more and be concerned about the step back. Another point would be the price point, in that you might argue you should expect more, and definitely not expect a step back.

The pads on a #457 have had to of needed replacing by now. My 800 is right around that same serial number and the pads started flaking 2 years ago with light use. I've always felt that the replacement pads were a different than the original set also.

It doesn't. That version was measured with Purrin's foam coupler which tends to do what you described. Purrin said so somewhere around here.

... tyll used purrin's coupler for one specific measurement out of several that were taken at the same time?

It's in the PDF booklet he posted one page back, close to the bottom

(I'm looking at the raw plots, comparing to the other measurements in that stack)

Ah, an extra 2 dB @ ~3 KHz... Yeah, I'd hardly call a 'fix' for the 10 dB dip, but whatever.

Alright to clear a few things up.
This is the mod that I'm guessing Tyll was using. There are other versions but I would assume he's using his own, if not I'm sure we'll find out soon in his article.

I'm guessing the upper midrange fix that @takato14 is talking about is due to the difference between the HD800 SN15001 and SN00457 that Tyll measured. The SN00457 has less upper midrange dip. However if you compare SN15001 Anax mod to SN00457 Anax mod you will see that this is not due to the mod but rather the variation between HD800's.

All of these measurements were taken by Tyll on his own measurement head setup.

    Thanks, logscool.

Huh?, are we talking about the same headphone?
Every measurement out there made with a solid-plate rig shows a big-ass dip @ ~3.5 KHz relative to the midrange. Compare that with HD6x0 measurements made in the same rigs, which are widely regarded as neutral-ish. Even Sennheiser's uber-smoothed, blocky and doctored plots that they provide with every pair show a dip there. Should it measure flat at ~3.5 KHz? That's up for discussion. Should it have a ~10 dB dip? Hell no.

About HATS, well, I have yet to see a rig that produces curves that resemble what I hear, even Tyll's raw plots are strangely skewed by the mannequin's 'average' ear canal.

Definitely. I listened the HD800S for hours , compared to my stock and modded HD800 and my ears told me there was almost no difference.

Come on.. everybody raves avout HD6X0 and would suddenly burn HD800S with a fixed 6khz because of increased bass distorsion ? That does not make sense for me.

I wonder if it's actually possible to hear this distortion in the bass region.

How about a tone generator and compare the HD800S to either the stock HD800 or the "HD800SD" ?

The fact that nobody has really brought it up until these recently measurements were done could allude to inaudiblity. That or explain why people considered them warmer?

Seems Marv' didnt receive his.. will produce a bunch today or tomorrow and send it to the first members of the list including Purrin. Dunno if I'll have the time for 10 pairs though. Will do my best.
