Quick report on the 4490 G2 card for the Lyr 3. It's excellent. Actually better than an external Modi 2U. Better clarity and more nuanced than the Modi.

I did compare 4490 G2 card to external Modi Multibit. Modi Multibit is a bit veiled in the lower registers and slightly less resolving. However the Modi Multibit just nails that vocal naturalness and has that Yggdrasil A2 midrange sweetness. Modi Multibit has better imaging precision, especially with the bass instruments, and better layering with wider stage. Headstage placement is deeper with 4490 G2 card though.

I couldn't get a multi-bit card to fit, possibly because either this or the Lyr 3 I have is a pre-production unit. Will ask @schiit for one or just buy one on Monday. To be continued.

Wow. It's great to comfortably recommend Lyr3+4490g2 to any headphone starters. Still think Lyr 3 deserves much better dacs, but saving a budget for yggy2 or equivalent super dacs will be just lovely.

    @purr1n so I'm correct thinking Lyr 3 + 4490 card + Mani > Lyr 3 + Phono Card + Modi 2U?

Planning a present to a deserving family member ...

Depends what is primary source. If TT with MM cart, then I would prioritize phono module. External Mani only if MC. Mani works better for MC.

For digital, Lyr 3 really can use true summit-fi DACs. It will scale with them. Actually, same for phonostages on analog side.

I understand about the DAC scaling, but my budget for the present doesn't go that high!

The ifi iDSD has a much more detailed/etched mid and treble area as where using the Jot was not nearly as clear. For headphone listening my preference is the complete opposite as I feel the Bifrost Multibit/Jot have a more realistic presentation and the iDSD is well, etched..however the LSR's really shine on the DSD. I use it exclusively for speaker listening now and with my K702's for gaming. For headphone jam'n The Bifrost Multibit/Jot reigns, though I'm considering the Lyr 3 once black becomes available.

LOL, Lyr 3 might be worse in that regard. Get a Schiit Sys or equivalent from that outfit that makes nwavguy gear. Really, just need a passive attenuator in between DAC and powered monitors.

Although good argument can be made for Saga active.

In general, don't use headamps as a preamp.

This is a very dumb question, forgive me, but what will happen if I plug in powered monitors directly into headphone out of the Lyr 3? Will anything blow up? Seeing as it can output 9W into 16 ohms has me curious.

Just don't. That's what preamp outs are for. You don't wanna send an amplified signal to the built in amp in the monitors.

It'll work if you don't turn the volume knob up too much. You may get some clipping if you max out the volume on the Lyr3. JBL doesn't really state these stuff properly so I can't say for sure.

Unbalanced the LSR series has 10k input impedance which means you'll only see like 1.8mW at the monitors at max output on the Lyr3.

Nonetheless using the preamp out will give you 0 issues and 0 things to worry about.

@purr1n I don't know if it's possible to judge, but do you think there is an appreciable difference between the 4490 G1 and G2 cards?

My Lyr 3 arrived today, letting it burn in with a Sylvania “Bad Boy,” early impressions with the Abyss and Focal Clear, thanks @purr1n!

Agree. Just don’t. I learned this one of three ways. The hard way, the hard way, and the hard way.

Too hard to say, but G1 was responsible for at least 50% of Jot problems.
