I wonder if it would have been too much of a design compromise to add a SPDIF coaxial output, in addition to the optical which has always been there. Same applies to the XBOX consoles.

I have mixed feelings about this thing. On one hand, I understand the need to keep things fresh and trying to move to a shorter hardware cycle by introducing periodic upgrades to consoles. On the other, it has to be a pain in the ass to deal with this or the Scorpio. Hell the XBOX Scorpio has 3x the GPU power of the original.

Too much increase in BOM. Even a dollar is considered unacceptable when only very small percentages of the population will use the feature.

I agree with Zero - even though the price point is $399 for the extra features and power, if you already own a PS4, is it really worth it to get the upgraded PS4 and spend another $400? I guess if you have the money maybe. There are two things that interest me about the new PS4 version - the ability to fully incorporate 4k resolution and the more powerful GPU and USB 3,1

    • Higher frame rates
    • Improved rendered pixel count
    • Improved VR scenes and details
    • Enhanced special effects

My feelings on this are mixed. On the one hand, it has been 3 years since the PS4 launched, so a new/updated console isn't completely crazy with the speed of improvements in tech. On the other hand, the Xbox One and PS4 weren't that much more powerful than their predecessors relative to the length of time between generations, hence the need for a quicker update cycle than last gen. I own a PS4 and a 1080P TV with no plans to get into VR, so I'm not upgrading. I'm hopeful that developers will indeed deliver equally high quality gameplay experiences for both versions (same framerates, features, etc.) as promised by Sony, but I wouldn't be surprised if it becomes an issue for competitive FPS in a year.

Also, developers are still in the process of dropping support for last gen. Hopefully once that's done, we can unlock a little more of the base PS4/Xbox One's potential.

Was pretty underwhelmed by the entire conference. Spec wise it is barely an increase in power. I was hoping it would be closer to the Scorpio, which is essentially looking like a next generation Xbox at this point.

What killed it for me was the lack of a 4k Blu ray drive. Seems like a huge oversight to not include one on your new 4k console. Even the $300 Xbox One S has one.

Horizon Zero Dawn continues to amaze me every time they show it off though.

Totally agree. Lack of 4k blu ray drive. Are you kidding me sony? You invented the f'ing blu ray. I own an xbox one which is collecting dust and a ps4 that we use pretty frequently and while I don't watch a ton of movies, this feature would have been much appreciated. I can't even get a 4k blu ray player for under 300 bucks on amazon, so what sony just did is convince me to get the xbox s. 4k gaming over a year ahead of the scorpio is still nice though, even if it's not as powerful.
