Lmao I'm sorry I started this whole de-railing. I totally didnt mean for my comment to create a spinoff thread. Jeez look at what happens when I go to @Maxx134's house!

Like I said, the changes were so small that it could have just been placebo. I'm not spending $630 on a power related item that MIGHT make a difference. I'd rather save that money towards schiit's speaker amp, my next ciem, a PCI lynx card, or towards moving out my parents house.

@cizx , he's not trying to "censor" you. Autism was used as a punch line in the course of the discussion and @Ice-man, understandably, called it out as something he didn't appreciate.

And @OJneg, he shouldn't have to pass a consistent-behavior checklist, to have what he said taken in good faith.

You can choose to respond as you like, but jumping to a censorship argument and throwing Rushdie quotes around is one of the more callous and assholish responses I've seen in a long time.

@Boops: Yeah. I understand the situation. He was trying to censor the guy who posted the pic of Neil deGrasse Tyson because he finds it offensive. Imagine how deGrasse Tyson would feel, considering he's a genius astrophysicist. I imagine that he wouldn't care, as he has more important things to care about than unfunny internet memes.

It's fine to find it unfunny. It's understandable to be offended. It's NOT okay to try to force someone to change what they're doing or saying BECAUSE you think it's offensive.

    This thread should be titled;

    SBAF goes off the rails

Dislikes for 'Friends' is going really well. This is like HF and Reddit rolled into one.

I don't understand really. People like Ojneg aren't offended when people make jokes about his Arab heritage. I think everyone just needs to chill a bit. If OJNeg is ok something as personal as his ethnicity, other people should be a little bit more willing to see a joke as a joke.

Hm, difficult to out-ham Mr. Heston's legendary performance. But I shall try nonetheless...

My favorite part is that you can hear Raul Julia's costume creaking as he shifts in it. :p

The irony is strong in this statement.

Disagreeing with censorship isn't censorship. I didn't tell him not to say what he did; I disliked it and expressed my alternate opinion.

I think it's really offensive that you're telling Ojneg he's not Arab. It's his choice that he identifies as Arab, not yours!

Huh, I never really looked at it that way. But did you just assume OJ's gender?

You're right, one is incredibly brave to be fighting the LGBT fight in the Arab world!

I think we have a fundamental disagreement about what "censorship" means. Asking someone to not make a joke because it makes light of some difficult personal circumstances is not censorship. It's asking for some consideration. How you choose to take it is, of course, up to you but "censorship" doesn't really fit.

I'll have you know xe treks 8 miles a day to the nearest internet cafe to load up a thumb drive with a 7-layer VPN just to safely deliver the memes to us.

No one here besides an administrator can actually censor someone. Censorship requires both the finding of offensive content and (∧) the suppression of it. The definition includes a logical connective.

With that in mind, all I see is one person disliking a Billy Joel/Forrest Whittaker meme and explaining why, and then you doing the same with their post for your own reasons (which I happen to identify and agree with, actually).

It's why I laugh at Louis C.K.'s jokes down to the marrow of my bones. But, logic is logic and censorship means what it means.

    So, I see irony.

It's the expecting someone to censor themselves because of something you find offensive thing that I was decrying. Obviously Ice-man can't censor anyone. He can, and did, try to guilt them into censoring themselves. My premise is that that is nonsense.

I've done all I'm going to do to make myself understood. It's up to the rest of you to either agree with me or misunderstand me. No honest, logical person can possibly disagree.

Bahahahahaha. OJ Arab. I didn't catch that the first time.

I'm really not too bothered by anything here. The way I see things is sort of like what Try Parker and Matt Stone were trying to convey in the South Park episode, the "The F Word". This episode makes the argument that inappropriate non-PC words only carry power if you, and society as a whole, lets them. This is the same line of argument that Mike Moffat took when several people got really mad at him for jokingly suggesting that a viable reason for Mac ownership was to impress LGBT friends.

I love that South Park episode because it neutered a rather ugly word, "fag", by redefining it from a anti-gay slur to obnoxious Harley bikers wannabees. Seriously, whenever I'm in San Ramon and Pleasanton, and I see those wannabees outlaws rev up their motors, I want to shout at them: "fag!"

dammit I was looking for the ignore-thread button for this topic but:

    hey @cizx, how about
    a) you consider SBAF members friends instead of foes
    b) if a Friend considers something "offensive" that you take a brain second to not offend him in the same vein in the future.
    c) OJ being insensitive to term <foobar> has zero relativity to SBAF Friend being sensitive to term <meltbanana>.

None of the above is called censorship (by a third party).
Instead it's simply- being a decent human and realizing personal sensitivities.
adjusting to such does not alter your effectiveness or communication if you re-evaluate language before typing.

with respect to Trey Parker and Matt Stone, they grew up miles from me and I respect their re-genereration and flips on society.
hell, I was so drunk at their CU campus Film Opening (Alfred Packer) that I only recall the musical elements around horses and hangings, yet a good time was had by all.

    a) I judge people by individual merit
    b) being offended is the offended party's choice, therefore it's their problem
    c) I don't even know what you're talking about

I'm not willing to give people special privileges because of what they believe. I'm not interested in altering my own principles in order to get along with people I don't agree with. I think having principles and sticking by them IS being a decent human being, but I respect your right to disagree. Your disagreement won't get special consideration, however.

My ex GF's brother in law was at Trey Parker's wedding. They grew up together. That also doesn't mean anything.
