Snagging the Phoenix Engineering stuff is genius. I was bedding mine in last weekend. Coming from an SDS, with a rim drive, this is noticeably better.

I love how shiny your platter is. When i get to polishing mine, I'll be taking shots, lol.

Curious, and too lazy to look back. What did you use for suspension on your HR? I was contemplating maple dowels or Edensound Terrastones, so am casting around for advice.

Vinyl also has that effect on me. I listened to Rough Mix (Pete Townshend/Ronnie Lane) and White City:A Novel straight through, without realizing it. Would love to know whats in your ATT100 sets.

So I have some of these Edensound Terrastones for a Classic, and intend to try them out after a while. But I must say, the quality to price ratio is not really what I expected. What exactly is the "Terra stone" material - it feels like a hard plastic?!?

I've been looking at that, with the Tach, instead of the Rega TT-PSU, for the little Planar 3, above. My only concern is the location and size of the magnet that has to go on the platter and the potential for it to affect a) the cartridge as it passes underneath and b) any potential impact on platter stability (I suspect the mass is too low to make a difference, but would love to hear that it's really a non-issue from someone using it).

Yes, probably overkill for the little table, but I'm in a upgradey/tweaky mood today ...

The magnet is .5 grams so depending on how heavy your platter is it will probably not impact the balance much. The location is another thing entirely. In certain spots in my table, I couldnt site the sensor without the magnet hitting it. Also, the sensor is affixed using scotch double back tape (the adhesive kind only, not the one with foam), so it could rise up enough to contact the magnet, so i make sure to push it down before playing a side). I've read instances where people stick the magnet on the side of the platter, and use BluTak to hold the sensor side ways.

I use the Falcon and the Roadrunner, which makes micro adjustments to the speed at .005 increments per rotation, which is killer, as I use a rim drive VPI, and nothing is finickier to use. I've seen the impact of stylus drag and how it increases closer to the end of a side, too.

I've always used a KAB, but that has nothing on a Roadrunner, which will show realtime loaded rotation speed. There are cheaper alternatives, like a laser that hits the tape to .1 accuracy. But you will still have to manually adjust the speed multiple times a side.

The bad thing is Phoenix Engineering closed last December, so the only ones available are over priced, or used, or both. So far...

I stuck my Phoenix Engineering magnet up and under on the inside lip, vertical, on my Classic platter. I did that so it couldn't be seen while playing. Watching it spin by on the bottom edge of the platter once a revolution would drive me nuts. I mounted the tach sensor on 4mm sound deadening foam to raise it high enough to read the magnet with 100% reliability.

Edit: BTW, that's not my platter. I just used it for reference to show the lip on the bottom.

Don't know. Probably plastic, I balked at the cost when they sent me an invoice, so I am gonna try maple dowels.

@Wfojas Since the Phoenix Engineering gear is no longer being produced, @shaizada made a good point regarding the Road Runner tach. If the sensor PCB portion breaks, it will become useless. We couldn't find any listed anywhere online, so I emailed Bob @Bob's Devices, and he still had some extra's in stock for a reasonable price of $50 +shipping. I ordered one for myself and another at the request of @shaizada as well. If any of you guys would like an extra just in case, I think Bob may still have a few. I hate seeing people price gouge on the Phoenix Engineering stuff, or anything for that matter.

Whoa? What happened to Phoenix Engineering? That's horrible. Now we're just going to see VPI's cost-cut ADS product as competition.

I've heard nothing but great things about the Phoenix Engineering products, so I'm surprised to hear they went under!

I heard back from HifiHeaven and they already ordered parts for the sensors. I read that Bill licensed it to them so that part of the supply will be okay for the short term, though not so sure about prices.

I thought this may be of interest, note that it is from 2014.

    7.5 Watt VPI motors
Submitted by phoenixengr on Wed, 2014-09-24 18:38

The original 600 RPM motor used by VPI was a special version of the Hurst 7.5W motor wound for 5.5W. For some reason when they sourced the 300 RPM motor, they did not do a special version so the power requirement remains 7.5W.

We are in the process of sourcing a footprint compatible 5W 300 RPM motor that will work in many of the VPI applications. We have samples of the motors and are still working on the pulleys. We hope to have this all sorted out by next month.

They did release the Eagle which addresses this. However, as it stands today with Phoenix Engineering permanently closed, no new units are available and no warranties are honored, so caveat emptor.

Not sure what parts of the IP HifiHeaven is licensing, hopefully all of it. He didnt want to sell the business to someone without manufacturing experience, and it was supposed to be a hobby (I read the first posting for it in vinyl asylum or vinyl something, when he first made it), but it got to be too much. Its really really worth it, I think. It prompted a backlash from normally laid back HW.

I don't think he really went under, just retired.
