It'd be especially nice since I have a drawer of 6SN7's already. I'd just have to find the ideal XLR to RCA as well because my DAC loses sq in single ended. There isn't an immediate need, though, as I do like the jot 2. The noise I was talking about simply *exists* when I crank the volume on grado's with the source muted to look for it. I can't think of a better $400 amp because the ones with switching psu's all sound worse regardless of how they measure.

    Thanks.

Though, man, the cost of that solution backs my point that Schiit should just make their own that isn't also an eq. In that very post marv is talking about a Schiit dac with XLR's different from its RCA's.

The problem is that the magic is in the transformers, and the magic probably won't be there at the price point of cheaper than Lokius. Not to mention the high possibility of added noise and the resulting avalanche of emails to Schiit, of customers pouting, and wanting a warranty/refund.

I think if removing the eq could even cut $50 off the price, it'd be more appealing to a lot of people -- is it common for people to leave eq's in their setups here? Admittedly I have no clue what the eq aspect costs though.

A box that's the same price without the eq would probably make more sense to at least half the community at large whether or not the feel's based in fact.

Ironically I'll probably get a lokius for the speaker system I eventually want to setup, where I just don't care whether or not an eq circuit is effecting things.

I'm sure Schiit can make them, but they won't be cheap. They would probably add another $150-$300 to each DAC. This noting what we are talking about here is a passive XLR to RCA solution.

Now with respect to a XLR to SE converter, Schiit does make them. :) They are inside of the DAC using active circuits. Well in case of the LIM, I'm pretty sure the output from the DA goes to two separate output stages. One is SE. Other BAL. Basically parallel to each other instead of dependent.

With the Yggdrasil OG, the SE output is taken from the BAL outputs via a summer circuit.

Some older CDPs took the SE output and split it into BAL. I knew Sony did this on quite a few models.

Does an active solution like the lokius suffer for being such in your experience?

Also, sorry I keep typing marv instead of merv.

Yes. Lokius does some cool things like sit you back in relation the soundstage, but at the expense of transparency, sins of omission. There was some discussion about this in the Lokius thread. Personally I would not recommend Lokius strictly as a BAL to SE converter because it is an EQ first and foremost.

Other active solutions may be better. Some people prefer a good simple opamp solution. Other solutions range from simple solid-state summer circuits to more complex ones. I prefer passive solutions such as line level transformers, but even this approach results in different sound. For example, the Jensens have a squarer sound and the Cinemags have a rounder sound. There are downsides is that some DAC outputs may be too weak to drive passive circuits. Or some DAC outputs may be too hot.

^ This. To add, they are all different sounding. What you personally prefer will be best.

FWIW since this is a Jot 2 thread. Look what I spotted at a post production facility somewhere in Hollywood. This is the desk of one of the post engineers. There is a quite a bit of Schiit in Hollywood. And yes, creatives still prefer Macs to PCs.

SCM 25As fed by Jotunheim 2
    IMG_1271.jpg

We moved the ATCs to where the Genelecs used to be. The ATC SCM 25As are just on totally 'nother level and likely one of the best if not the best monitor of this size. They are a little bit colored, slightly tipped up on the bottom and top. However, any sound engineer can easily work through this. What I like about the SCM 25A is that they have heft in the lows without sounding muddy, sound highly dynamic, and really allow a sound engineer to hear into the mix. None of these factors are really explained in most typical measurements. Note that the SCM 25A has the magical SCM midrange. Those who are used to two-ways with a woofer and smaller woofer should try to get an audition. Speakers with good dedicated midranges are magical.

ATCs tend to be rare because they are expensive. I rarely see them, and if I do, they are often in smaller more boutique sound facilities, usually ones involved with music production (as opposed to broadcast, streaming, or features). Are they worth it? Is a Porsche worth it?

Anyway, free feel to amuse yourself at the armchair-quarterback sound club (they seem to hate ATCs because FR and dispersion not as good as cheapy JBL 5"s): https://www.audiosciencereview.com/forum/index.php?threads/atc-speakers-monitors.17448/

I seem to be Jot-cursed right now. My old Jot's power switch fell to bits, so I decided to get a Jot 2 with the delta-sigma DAC and relegate the old one to a spare/other duties after it's fixed.

However, after being plugged in for a few hours, the DAC card started falling over:

    dodgydac.jpg

This is on an extremely stable win 10 machine which has been running a Gungnir Multibit for years. It has bags of power to spare, and doesn't have a heavy load on any of the USB buses. I used good-quality cables (mostly nice sturdy Anker A to C ones) which check out just fine as having the right stuff connected on my little Chinese USB continuity checker and can power far hungrier things like mutli-TB USB SSDs. The cables are generally 1.5 metres or so in length, all below 2 metres.

This happens connected to both USB 3 and USB 3-2 gen 2 ports, both of which are capable of delivering far more than the 500mA of USB 2; the manual demands USB 2-capable cables.

It's also not a software problem. If the Jot 2 is plugged in, the machine won't even POST:

    dodgy_dac_wontpost.jpg

I know that sometimes USB receivers power themselves from the host, via vbus, rather than the device- and that's fine. Even then, the Unison USB stuff shouldn't be doing this. Has anyone else encountered this on a Jot 2- and if you solved it, how? Right now, it's pissing off my PC to the point where it's trying to protect itself from hardware damage.

I bought the Jot 2 from the UK dealer with the DAC pre-installed.

Try a different computer to confirm the issue is with the jot 100% which seems to be the case but just to be sure you computer isn't failing or some other weird issue

I have a thing for ATC - I had 10L actives 10 years ago, loved the fast bass (closed box) but it was a bass light and the sounded harsh in my untreated lving room - I'm tempted to get the passive ATC scm19 but they're still -6db @ 54hz.

I do think the dispersion with ATC is a bit old school I somewhat agree with audioscience review on that aspect - they need a well damped and treated room to not reflect and bounce sound all over the place (studios are good). I don't think Audioscience review provide decay measurements, this is where the ATCs kick ass - there is no overstay of any bass notes, they attack and decay almost instantly - its a closed box long throw bass driver characteristic which we don't get much nowadays.. I heard similar bass behaviour with my dad's old celestion dittion 44 speakers.

imo I find the similar thing with genelecs - they spray the sound everywhere and need treatment to sound their best. In a weird way I prefer the iloud MTM for non treated rooms - I think their drive array causes less vertical bounce making them more suited to non studio rooms. Id like to see ATC do bit more innovation more advanced/DSP sound science, they're resting on their laurels lately thanks to their legendary status.

I am quite sure this is an issue with the USB DAC card. Contact retailer to get a replacement.

Yes, it was upsetting other computers too, forgot to mention that. However- plot twist. now it's behaving nice as pie. Have left it on for extended periods, let the attached computer sleep, all sorts. Not a sign of an issue, using one of the original test group of cables and the same PC as when the problem first manifested. If it doesn't misbehave again, I will shrug and move on. Keeping an eye on it for now.

    Immediate impressions:

Interesting amp. I was wanting a DS DAC as a power efficiency thing (not having to leave it on), but obviously that runs the risk of headache-inducing harshness. I'm not really getting too much, the Jot 2's presentation of treble seems to lack that slightly overenthusiastic quality of the first one, which might be helping there. Running it from my Gungnir Multibit, it just sounds plain nice.

There's still not a ton of depth in the sound, but it's less severely shallow than the first one to my ears, but I might just be imagining it. It's still incredibly wide, but sounds more "wrap-around" than the OG Jot's straight plank, too.

The timbre seems more convincing, too- hearing more actual instruments rather than just sound. Right now, the bongos in REM's "low" have the initial crisp transient and nice hollow resonance that a Buchla LPG owner would kill for. The differences in the strikes really pop, for some reason. Odd thing to notice, but it's a very familiar track. There's something less.. weirdly uniform about the timbre, though I'd hate to claim I could pick it out reliably double-blind.

I spent a bit of time cursing trying to get my RME interface to come out of the attached nearfields earlier; of course the pre switch was down. A tiny difference which will trip me up- but it will help avoid the "hey, you know that's coming out of the speakers, right?" effect. Nice small extra feature.
