Why wouldn't it be okay? Did anyone imply otherwise?

While still being in a solid state and connecting my tube to an original HD800 cable ...
wouldn't that give me an awfully long tail(ed) pair of special Sennheiser connectors dragging behind me when I walk around ?

Sir, why spend hundreds on a cable to tweak the sound, while buying other cheaper components: tubes, or some simple modifications, can make significantly more tweak of the sound?

I do have the original and kept it for the sole purpose to be able to understand the sonic differences. So sure, I'll be happy to share my findings.

Are you gonna open it up for comparisons/science?

Me? No, I'll leave the science and graphs to folks like Purrin. I just prefer to listen for certain characteristics and see what the sound and music does for me. I was a musician for 20 years, so tone of voices and instruments is what is most important to me. I can usually spot flaws pretty quickly with regard to how natural the tone sounds. That's really what it's about for me.

No; my instruction manual (09/2014 revision) says to view the individualized FR via the Product Registration on the web site.

^^ One dude on HF doesn't mean that much to me, if that's what you're referring to. Give it some time, there aren't even broken yet. ;)

    Waiting for measurements general

Though it is concerning that with the variations in frequency response of various HD800s, this 'slightly better' sounding alternative may not even have distinction among the tolerances of those variances. I mean hey there are HD600 models with more variance in the response of the individual drivers than an HD600 compared to an HD558 or HD598.

Will it be worth it? Only time will tell.

Waiting for SBAF to crowdfund an HD800S to be taken apart so we can all benefit from learning the exact properties of its resonator.

Resonator looked like it could be scanned and 3D printed...

This thread is already derailed. Google brought me here for cats+schlongs and so far everyone is talking about headphones.

I was thinking of buying an HD800 to eventually mod, but Jan's pricing on HD800S works out pretty much the same once you add a balanced cable...

Well the S may very well be better than a modded HD800 (different at the least), plus it's black. :) Otoh, I was one of a few who loved the look of the HD800 (MUCH better in person than pics), and so far the pics of the S look just ok-may it'll look better in person too.

My vivisection of the HD800 showed that the peak was caused by the cup design and wasn't inherent in the driver. I am certain part of that peak remains. The resonator will mitigate or counteract against the peak, but it won't eliminate it. Heck, even Axel F said "a bit". It surprises me (no, it doesn't surprise me) at the amount of wishful thinking that so many people have regarding the HD800S.

We are going to get the HD800S and see what we can do to the existing HD800 to make it perform similarly for a few dollars. I'm done spending thousands of dollars for headphones.

Me too. I liked the space-agey look of it. I might get one again if playing operation on the HD800S reveals the next level of mod.

Hope the HD800S mod will be 98% listenable.

Noob question: How does Jan have them when even Sennheiser isn't selling them yet? As a newcomer, this raises all kinds of suspicion in me.

Just looking for enlightenment really. I already emailed Jan and have a pair on hold. :D
