I have found if an individual really wants to sell something that they suddenly change their mind and accept regular paypal. I have had this happen two times this year.

 

I actually decided to take the risk and bought that 3FN. Seller was very polite and shipped same day with insurance and tracking number. I absolutely would not have bothered if not for the perfect feedback history.

 

Having just been scammed on a classified site and then experiencing a surprisingly smooth refund process via PayPal G&S, I'm inclined never to do F&F again. Makes me wonder why sellers insist on the latter, actually. After all, the buyer can always cover the fees on their end.

 

IRS regulations with G&S maybe one reason. They did delay it by another year and have raised the total threshold to $5000 this year.

 

Nice to know they raised the limit to $5000. I might sell off some excess gear now.

I recently had someone insist on this as a reason for F&F. The transaction was smooth - this seller had well over 100 positive reviews on multiple sites - but as a buyer, I get the pause for concern.

As far as taxes, it’s a pain in the butt, but if you can’t just exclude income reported on the 1099s for personal use (something that’s been discussed, but I’m not sure if it’s part of the IRS regulations) sellers can track their cost basis, and deduct that from the proceeds. Whether it counts as hobby income or is reported on a schedule C would also determine if losses are deductible, too.

Again, it’s messy, and I’m sympathetic to people doing a lot of selling wanting to avoid it.

 

The tax rules are no different now than they were before. If you didn’t make any money on a sale, you shouldn’t need to report the “income” shown on any 1099-K you receive from those sales. Look up garage sale IRS rules and the like.

Of course you should always consult your tax professional if you have questions.

By some super odd coincidence, these are both in my town though different sellers at opposite ends of town from me.

The K340 is a very good price for a rare headphone if you like to collect. I don't even know if that's a good price on the K4, it's even rarer and it's been forever since I've even seen one for sale.
