I don't have much experience with mid-tier amps, although I really like the Jotunheim.
Been listening to it all day, with hd800-sdr. Also tried lcd3f and some iems.
A hair bright, using akm4490 module makes it a bit more bright. Something to keep it mind with pairings.

Has anyone tried Jotunheim DAC version with and without Wyrd? If so, does Wyrd make a noticeable positive improvement?

Before that I should ask Jason, is the Jotunheim DAC module internally powered or via 5V USB from computer? If it is self-powered by the DAC then there should Wyrd shouldn't make much difference (at least in theory).

I would. $30 sounds reasonable to me. (I have no idea how typical I am on this, but since you are asking...)

If one buys this as a headphone amp/preamp, another single ended input seems like it would be useful to some.

Making it optional rather than standard makes more sense to me. Otherwise people will be seeing the Jotunheim starting at $429 rather than $399 and that seems to have an impact.

And somehow have that done in the digital domain with some variant of the megaburrito filter... but that's kind of a pipe dream.

Na. Just analog tone controls the old fashioned way with a defeat button. This would make amps more flexible and preclude neurotic audiophiles from buying eighteen amps just to find the right tonal synergy. I am certain that the audiophile companies colluded to get rid of tone controls so they could sell more amps and sundry* accessories.

Yeah, but doing that while also meeting the super strict standards (read: measurements) of audiophiles/enthusiasts is tough. And it isn't cheap to build a nice EQ in the pro world either. So I dunno. Plus people would agonize over the center freq and Q (I know I would, as I use parametric EQs for work all the time). The right center freq for one tune is not the right for another, etc, though of course a broad and gentle Q would minimize this.

Oh, so you were at the meet and know what the environment was like and what the conditions were?

I mean, I only brought down my own pair of headphones and listened in relatively quiet rooms to recordings I am familiar with, so.... yeah.

It is ok for different people to have different opinions on a piece of gear, or is it?

I take your point but it's coming across a bit

It would be fair to include the impressions of everyone who was there that writes a cogent report (which would definitely include T-Money). Still, I don't think it's a shocker than even with good meet conditions it's often not ideal. You listened with the built-in DAC and you also listened to vinyl, which you don't normally listen to, right? So using your own DAC at home might give you a very different impression. It doesn't invalidate your impressions, but it does mean there is room for further investigation. People here focused way too hard on the "combo" portion of the Jotunheim when that is not what holds value for SBAF members/serious enthusiasts. It's the amp section.

    As you posted:

I'm confused. You specifically mentioned wanting something like a Yggdrasil running into the Jotun to get "an honest assessment of Jotun's capability as an amp," as well as mentioning two turntable sources, one sounding "sketchy" and the other "just ok" as well as the records not seeming particularly well cared for. Everything you've mentioned up to this point indicates that you yourself never heard the amp just as an amp for what it is, with sources you were familiar with, and were even disappointed by the fact. If anything, you pointed out exactly what the meet conditions were like by expressing your clearly implied or directly mentioned disappointment. You weren't the only one to mention a disappointment at not having other sources to hook the Jotun up to at the meet to better understand how just the amp sounded.

Now you are upset because Marv posted impression links from people that bought the amp and have had a chance to try them at home, with their own, familiar sources, in more ideal conditions? Your most recent, quoted post seems more like a 180 compared to your previous posts, which I just reviewed. Now it's all OK and you're sure your impressions have as much merit because you used recordings you were familiar with (on the module DAC you weren't sure about, or the sketchy turntable, or the just ok turnable, and even that with records of questionable quality)?

You can't have it both ways.

IMO, Marv is just adding links to people's impressions on this thread who didn't listen to them at the schiit show. I think it's more convenient to put them there as this has now become the entry Jotunheim thread of record. This is on top of what the others said.

Personally, I'm more interested in comparison between Jotun with Lyr 2 than Valhalla 2, even though I own Val 2. Lyr 2 and Jotun (based on impressions so far) share quite similar sound sig (neutal-warm/sweet). Lyr 2 also matches well with low Z phones, again like Jotun. Plus, Lyr 2 can be more flexible than Jotun with tube rolling capability.

$50 difference between Valhalla 2-Jotun-Lyr 2 is more nail-biting than Android phones.

Ever tried this thing Marv? http://www.phasemation.com/product/epa-007x.html
Japanese dual mono discrete headamp with output impedance and damping factor control knobs. I've been curious about it for a while.

I wasn't there, but based on the photos and my attendance last year, I actually do have good sense of what those conditions were like. Which I would assume to be quite good. The reason your impressions were not acknowledged (which seems to be the heart of the matter) is because your impressions were with the built-in DAC.

All of the private messages I've received have concerned the performance of the amp with external sources. I doubt the audience here is really all that interested in the built-in DAC considering what other high-value options are available. I apologize for my misstatement and will make corrections to the post. As far as my opinion of the Jotunheim with the built-in DAC, tonally, it's too forward and lean sounding with neutral headphones; and in terms of technicalities, it's merely serviceable.

Heard of it, but damping factor knobs is just a bit too weird and neurosis inducing for me.

That's why a defeat switch. In terms of EQ, tone controls were never mean to be PEQ. Tone controls are really just a bass shelf and treble shelf, so the center points aren't as crucial.

I don't think audiophiles are tough. I think audiophiles have become retarded and would rather buy gear to get "tonal synergies" rather than twist a knob.

Is there any kind of passive but adjustable eq module that could be inserted between DAC and amp, or between amp and headphones? Or is that a can of worms best left unopened?

That would be one way, but very problematic since we don't know the impedance curves of the transducers and passive devices after the outputs are require high values (big coils and/or big caps). I haven't given this much thought, but I'm pretty sure headamps in the past with such circuits, the AMB M3 or PPA, implemented a bass shelf filter in the feedback loop.

I think it would be pretty cool if Schiit made a piece of modest audio jewelry for shits and giggles. Maybe put the SE version of their PivotPoint topology into an aluminum billet chassis with fancy gold trim tone control knobs. Why not balanced for the luxury product? There a certain elegance and lack of hassle with SE. Or maybe this can be a SuperBAF GoFundMe project.
