I just got my JotuDAC, and this is super preliminary, but compared to the multibit Modi, the internal DAC is not as good as far as reverb decay (shorter on the 4490) and untangling sounds when lots of things are going on, and bass is noticeably more present on the Modibit. But! I don't know what the levels of the internal card is like compared to the Modi. They're in the same ballpark, but may not be the same, so that alone could account for the differences. Anyway, sound peeping isn't too important to me as this is going to be my computer's control center. I do have an Yggdrasil at home, and may try that out at some point.

edit: Modibit is definitely richer sounding (not quite gooey) than the 4490 on acoustic recordings.

Both being driven by the same computer (Macbook Air, iTunes) over a pair of USB cables, using a pair of unmodded HD-650s except for attaching a 4-pin XLR to the stock cable. Listening on the balanced output.

Not quite :) Something more like the completely passive EQ @Marvey built for the Elear loaner but with an adjustable boost/cut.

My friend Dan Kennedy designed one of the finest sounding 2 channel analog EQ ever for pro-audio. Doesn't stop someone from using it in the playback chain:

Analog EQ topologies vary all over the map as do headphone amps and DACs.

schiit could just add passive tone controls to the Sys and call it a Sys+ or something.

A long time ago when I was trying out vintage on HF, I posted a thread on why mfgs dont have tone controls.... Man.. The responses were as if it was the worst idea. They suggested behringer hardware eqs etc.

You know what I would really like? A crossfeed box that goes between source and amp. Most crossfeed I see is built into the amp and doesn't allow me the choice of using the amp I want. Plus the cross compatibility with other amps and sources is something I believe would really appeal to Schiit. Maybe there's a chance that Mike's Manhattan project involves this but in the digital domain instead of the analog domain.

I've heard many of the hardware crossfeed implementations. For the most part they didn't wow me. Waves NX (digital domain approx $100) is the first one that I can get behind. It isn't perfect but a major step toward a more 3-D presentation in headphones.
Obligatory jotunheim reference. Will be listening both with and without the Waves NX through Yggdrasil + (Jotunheim or ZDSE) fed with an Ethernet Dante Rednet D16 to Mutec MC-3+ to compare the 3-D presentation / immersion.

I'm interested in a comparison between Jotunheim and Ragnarok now.

Winter is coming. I'll need something to do.

Rednet and Mutec! Jealous of your setup. Will you be making any amp measurements of the Jotun?

Now I just thought of another add on card for the Jotun. Crossfeed SE input.

You know me too well... Can't resist new Schiit. I have an Elear coming in sometime later next week as well, so if we do a bit of surgery on the cable we can try it balanced vs the Rag.
