So true, being a kid in the 80's and watching the genre grow from something small and niche into a juggernaut of bullshit has been enlightening to say the least.
enjoyed his "disco" analogy. RUN-DMC began my obsession with hip-hop, going from the age of 8 right up until my early 30s. now i can't stand 99% of what has passed as "hip-hop" since around 2010. now hoping the genre dies a quick death, goes back underground. only chance i think for it to rise again.
grumpy old man here who still thinks golden era is still the greatest era. hip-hop still had hope in the early 00's, but i believe the $outhern mixtape movement in the late 00's was what really poisoned the well. much of the modern sound is rooted there, and it's always been garbage to my ears.
Kendrick Lamar and RTJ are still around. Sure Iggy Azelae ripped off the Wutang Clan's "Cream" and Nicky Minaj is still making her music. But there is still innovation and freshness in the genre.
