My proposed solution is... crowdsourcing with multiple twists.

I am designing a site/platform that allows users to duel/pit devices againts each other. This way there is no need to know where the devices would reach on an absolute scale. It's enough to know how many percents the "weaker" device offers from the "stronger" device's performance on predetermined sonic attributes.

Reviewing more devices gives your impressions more weight. When you combine these reviews from multiple users by doing some number crunching, you get an overall "absolute" score for all the reviewed devices.

There's of course multiple things that need to be done exactly right for this to work. Special attention must be paid to the actual framework - e.g. what are the device categories, what are the users allowed to review and in what order.

Sounds like a tall order, will be interested in seeing what you come up with :)

Yup, there's lot to do, currently working on an API which does most of the heavy lifting. Global/Absolute device scores are updated periodically, which requires a separate number crunching script. Then there's the implementation phase, when I've to design the actual website around it. I suppose I've got something to show by next spring or summer. Damn day job taking all my time and energy!
