Hope you're not up here, it's nuts. I drove my Super B train to an evacuation center just north of town with 40 cubes (10 000 gallons) of potable water yesterday around 6pm.
The evac center was getting engulfed by a wall of smoke that filled the horizon and completely blocked the sky as I pulled out and headed back north on hwy 63 to my camp. People were fleeing north on 63 in the southbound lanes around Syncrude. Hwy 63 north bound is a dead end, it turns to a gravel road where I work (Fort Hills) and soon ends...
My camp has taken in almost 2000 people since yesterday. The south side neighborhoods of Beacon Hill, Abasand, and Waterways are almost completely flattened. The entire city of 80 000 people has been ordered evacuated.
Apprx 35 000 managed to flee south, while 15 000 are trapped north of the city. Officials are urging people to stay put and not travel. Firefighters managed to put out the structure fires in the city over night, but with another hot windy day, everyone is holding their breathe.
Wow... crazy @JK47 - glad you're safe and helping out. Our site is about 15km south of the fire right now, and I'm happy to be on days off. Flying back in Wednesday...
Yup, the Nova Hotel across the way is up in flames...
Anzac and Gregoire Estates are being evacuated as I type this.
Dry lightning is in the forecast tonight.
There is a fire on the south end of the Fort Hills site now as well. Fire trucks and helicopters were trying to put it out a few hours ago
