Keep it in the fridge, it lasts way longer that way.

lol, I think there's some somewhere in my fridge that must be at least a couple of years of old. Sugru is a wonderful solution. One buys it to fix a problem, and then wait ages for the next problem. Unless you take the hammer/everythings-a-nail approach, in which case welcome to a house full of misshapen bits of silicone! :)

D'oh, I did not know the stuff would expire... I guess the unopened package I have is garbage now since it's over a year past due. What happens when you try to use it?

They are very open about its limited shelf life: six months, iirc? Extendable by keeping it in the fridge. I don't know what happens when it goes off. I'd assume it just sets?

Normal Sugru: Slightly tacky, almost like putty, and it doesn't stain and seep into every little crack and seam. Set it, wait, and be happy.

Expired Sugru: Instead of being tacky it's like "oily sand".
    1) When you pick up a little bit of it and try to mold it, it breaks into smaller chunks instead of working like putty. Repeat until you get basically sand and a mess.

    2) Also, the "sand" component of it is now sticks to everything but doesn't feel sticky. I looked down and my fingers were black from it filling in my fingerprints (it's that fine of a sand). Used petroleum jelly as a release agent before it could really set on my hands and still took 1.5 hours to scrub out. Made a mess of my project too.

To top it all off, despite it sticking to my hands and everything I didn't want it ti stick to, once the object I actually wanted to make cured, it wasn't as sticky as regular Sugru. In short, an inferior result.

But yes, going to start keeping it in the fridge, and even then, once it hits expiry, I'm tossing it. $4 for a single small packet is expensive, but I value 3 hours of clean up more than $4.

Thanks very much. If I ever find, and try to use, what I might still have in the fridge, I now know the warning signs to just chuck it and not attempt to use it.

Learning from experience: good. Learning from other's experience: better! :)
