    If you go into settings -> sounds, you can set the volume to the max and then turn off "change with buttons", then the buttons will only effect music and videos and stuff.

    I haven't yet upgraded to 10... Thanks for the tip @SoupRKnowva. I must have turned my volume down yesterday. Still made the flight this morning in a mad rush!

    Nope, it's actually been like that for quite a while, as long as I can remember actually. It just makes it so you can't silent your alarms, cause even in vibrate mode alarms will still go off.
