They will feel weird and firm at first then- but should sound a lot less wooly in the bass. Even at the price Senn charge for those pads, the genuine part is totally worth it. I replaced mine recently, and it was a shocking reminder of the role that pads play in the sound.
Yeah, it's just not worth it as a money saving attempt, you'd end up buying so many third-party ones before finding some that works as well, it'd be a time and money sink.
That's not to say that modders haven't found specific pads that they like, I'm sure, but that's more crazy experimentation.
I've "saved" over $200 on replacement pads for my HD650s. And by "saved," I mean "wasted over $200 not buying the real thing only to get the real thing every time."
