Could someone educate me on what is necessary to go from the HDMI output of an AppleTV to SPDIF (or any other standard like AES)? Does an HDMI cable contain pins for SPDIF Audio? Is the issue some sort of encryption to protect from ripping music from the stream?

I'm looking for a solution to stream Apple Music losslessly to my home system. Airplay is convenient, but I'm unsure if I'm getting lossless output to my Volumio streamer. I was hoping to get an Apple TV, and use the Apple Music app locally there and output through the HDMI to the Raspberry Pi.

    Any suggestions are welcomed.

Apologies if this has been covered in another thread. I did search first!

    Thank you.

If I’m not mistaken, HDMI has lots of encryption. There are solutions, but they’re likely not cheap. Here is a popular HDMI-to-S/PDIF converter:

Whatever you try here, make sure it has a return policy. I could never get an HDMI to SPDIF converter to work from my Oppo BDP-105D into my Yggdrasil Analog 1. That was actually part of the reason that I sold that Oppo and got a 103D with an Audiopraise board in it that replaced the analog board with transformer-isolated / reclocked SPDIF out. I still use that functionality today, and just use the Oppo's ARC functionality when I am watching stuff on the TV and want to pipe it from TV --> Oppo --> DAC. (Not an inexpensive solution though, but I also did this to decode SACDs to PCM and play those through the Yggdrasil as well.)

I used to have a WiiM Ultra that I used to take HDMI from my tv to feed into my dac. Maybe too expensive if you don't use any of the other features though.

I believe it passes through, but you'll have to study up on the product I think.

These devices are important for consoles like PS5 and Xbox series x, the manufacturers no longer provide spdif out.

AIUI, the audio data is embedded into the blanking space between video frames.
That means that the video has to be decrypted et al before a device can get at the audio.

HDMI is ridiculously complicated for the value it offers.

I'm starting to think that just getting a longer USB cable is going to be easier…

Thank you folks for some learning!

Are you thinking of using the Apple TV headless, or attached to a TV? You could use its s/pdif output, otherwise.

I was thinking exactly that. A headless Apple TV that could run the Apple Music app.
