I've been on a Megadeth tear lately, and while revisiting the album Youthanasia it occurred to me how underappreciated this album is. So much so that I made the executive decision to make this its own thread. So there.

Now I am fully aware that many so called die hard Megadeth fans (of which I number myself among) consider it somewhat of a Megadeth gone "pop" album. And there certainly is something to that. It's tough to compete with Rust in Piece (basically the Sgt. Peppers of Megadeth), for raw, inventive metal. The song structure on Youthanasia is straightforward, not showy, just full of really hooky riffs. Mustaine's treatment of the lyrics is remarkably melodic, and as always, hysterical to sing along to. Make those weird Mustaine grunts, etc.

Finally, the recording sounds great. It has a nice, easy, almost caressing quality to it.

Feel free to chime in with opinions and any other important Megadeth moments.

Youthanasia my favorite non-speed-metal Megadeth record. Wouldn't mind one or two faster songs in the middle, lol.
I really love the sound of it. If I was to mix a rock/metal song, this would be my refrence for a balanced sound. The ratio of bass, guitars, vocals and cymbals just feel right.
